Does anyone here use it? The last Amiga OS I used was on my 600. What's going on with it now? Is it still exclusively PowerPC, or can it run on AMD/Intel systems?

Still requires overpriced / slow ppc hardware. If they want to see the OS go anywhere, its about time they ported to PS3 or x86.

Bummer. I was hoping they'd have moved on to modern processors by now. I always liked the look of the interface.

After reading up on it a bit, wouldn't it be difficult to adapt for other architectures? Why do you think the PS3 would be a good fit?

Ahh. That'd be very interesting. Pity I don't own a PS3, though. I guess that progress is sort of halted because of the ongoing legal dispute about the OS. Imagine if it was made open source. Some enterprising coder would probably have it on the PS3 in no time.

Sadly the problem lies with that the OS is aimed at the old hardware which requires a PPC to run. If you don't have a PPC to get one is going to cost £300-500 and that's for a 300MHz processor with 256MB RAM.

For that price you can get a new half-decent PC and there's only so many people with these types of machines.

Might have to satisfy my curiousity with emulation of the older Workbenches.

Is Amiga Forever a ripoff, or is actually worthwhile?

Amiga Forever is quite good (especially if you're new to Amiga emulation as it gives you profiles to run games, etc. - easily found on WinUAE websites and forums but for the novice its good) as it means you have legal kickstart roms then to do what you like with.

WinUAE is by far the best emulator however you need the kickstart roms to run it which you would get with Amiga Forever.

Yeah the videos are well worth a look. There's not a lot on there that you can get online but to have a legal copy of the roms is worth it. I own two Amigas at present (Amiga 1200 Tower / Amiga 2000 Desktop) so I have my kickstart ROM's which I can use. :)

I've got an Amiga 600 with a faulty (I believe) power supply. The last game I remember playing on it was Syndicate. If the emulation software isn't too demanding, I might install ami forever on my NC10 and plug it into my tv! Hopefully I'll be able to find a proper two button joystick for some Sensi as well.

Did you ever play a game called Crystal Dragon? It was an Eye of the Beholder style RPG.

Sorry, nostalgia overload. What was the 2000 Desktop like? What could it do?

Lots of amiga fan websites about still. amiga.org has lots of info.

AFAIK workbench 4 works with a PowerPC based amiga that was stopped being produced by a 3rd party before WB4 was even launched. Patents and copyrights for different parts of the amiga hardware and O/S are owned by different companies, and none can agree on a way forward which is why the O/S has never been released for other processors and platforms.
