Amp in protected mode?

Ahh, I'm guessing you have an infamous 'purple mosfet' amp, looks a little like this yes?

I've had a few of these over the years, they're pretty cheap and nasty and they don't like being bridged, were you running it in bridged mode at all?

Aha yes i have that one too, the amp-360 but at the moment i have the amp-480 in the car.
And yes i have bridged the connection i believe i have done it correctly lol.

Also the amp its self has two fuses is that for like each channel im not sure because another amp i have just has one and it has two channels?

Hi, there is not 1 fuse per channel.

Both fuses are for the whole amp, they both need to be there.

Which amp is it that is going into protect, the 480 or the 360w?

aha thanks i did think that, thank you for clearing that i best check both those fuses when i get the chance.
And it is the 480 that is in protect, i have not had the 360 up and running yet

Mine came with 2 x 30A fuses, but it was the 600W model. 25A Fuses would be ok on the 480W model, the power supplies on them are pretty weak anyway.

If the 480 is still wired up in bridged mode then try it again in normal mode, try each channel in it's own and see if it still goes into protect...

Okay thank you but i believe this is off the top of my head though, that the fuses were 40A..Ill have to check and get back too you on that

And right i shall try that thank you

No problem, 40A fuses will be fine, as long as they are 25A or more that will be ok.

Protected mode is usually when there is a short circuilt between between speaker terminals. Check all your speaker wiring to check for loose strands crossing terminals.

If the unit wasn't earthed properly then it either just wouldn't work, or cut out at high volume.

Sounding newbie here but by speaker terminals you mean the wires going from the amp to the subwoofer?

I put in another amp and that worked with no problems lets hope it doesnt die in 3 days like this one..

My amp works like the following:

Dodgy Earth - Protected Light
Dodgy RCA - Protected Light
No Power but Remote Cable - Protected Light
Loose Speaker Cables - Full Power

I have installed my amp in numerous cars, hence why I know all of the above. It's not the purple one though

It's possible the amp goes into protect if it detects open circuit (ie no speaker connected) as this can be bad for it too. Chances are it is buggered though

Yeah probably mate, is there any way for it too be fixed, or is it a bin job?
Obviously wouldn't fix it myself, take it somewhere maybe

Probably best to buy a better amp lol, well ill see if this other one lasts longer

I've still got my broken purple mosfet amps somewhere, I was going to bin them as they're not really worth fixing, I just used the case as a heatsink for something else.

Yeah amp is rubbish but its fine i only paid £6 for 2 of them and cables
