Amp interfering with freeview signal

We recently dropped TV from our Virgin package to save money and are just using the ariel plugged into the TV for freeview at the moment. The problem is that as soon as the Amp is switched on the signal cuts out almost completely, if it's off then it's perfectly fine.

I'm thinking it could be the cable as it's just an ancient one that was in the loft, and it's about 5m long when it only needs to be 1m. Can anyone suggest a cable that might not be interfered with by the amp? I assume shielded of some sort.

If that doesn't work then i guess it'll be a new cabinet so the amp can be placed at the other side.
 
I've seen this with those thin crappy aerial fly leads; the ones with the moulded plug ends. They really are awful at suppressing interference. They are also very lossy too. Old analogue-era "lossless" aerial coax is still lossy but not as bad as the off-the-shelf aerial extension kits and fly leads. The cable can degrade though, especially outside. The outer goes brittle and becomes porous. Moisture makes the cables far more lossy. Another thing is the shielding; it is always inadequate. A single layer of braid barely covering 50% of the inner just isn't enough any more. Decent coax has a denser braid covering for low frequency shielding and a foil layer to help block high frequency interference.

Webro WF65 is standard fit aerial coax amongst those of us in the trade who know what we are doing. It's not expensive either.
 
damn i cant remember where i got my good cable from. but i had freeview signal issues and it did immediately help.

If i'm looking at the right stuff that seems to be twin leads together, is that really the right cable for the wall arial socket to the TV? If it is then what do you do with the second part of the lead, just cap it and leave dangling? :confused:
 
My bad. I was talking to someone about a satellite install and had WF65 on my mind for that.

The stuff you want is Webro WF100 :)

Just wanted to say thanks, arrived this morning and all sorted now. Took longer to get the cable nice and neat than it did cutting down and adding adding the connectors :)

Interference from the amp is gone and can get 5HD now plus a couple of other channels we'll never watch have popped up after a retune too.
 
Don't tell dowie. It can't possibly be correct unless its been double blind tested, analysed to death and a whole bunch of test figures produced that he doesn't understand but nevertheless look impressive. In short, if you notice any improvements just by looking then according to him you're both gullible fools ;-) lol
