Ampere Next in 2022, not new 'Lovelace' architecture

I keep hearing rumours about a new 'Lovelace' architecture for 2022, but the roadmap says 'Ampere Next' is coming next year, presumably based on TSMC's 5nm fab. process. So, nothing new here, just same old BS from the rumour mill I suppose.

It does occur to me that this could be a joke from Nvidia though, 'Ampere Next Next' in 2024 sounds ridiculous (or could even just be just a placeholder, for now).

Same architecture (Ampere), presumably improved and on more advanced nodes. Nvidia info is bound to be more accurate than random rumours ppl start, no doubt to boost their youtube channels...

There's lots of rumours about MCM, not much chance of that either with the same architecture.

It still mentions 'Ampere Next' on the Ampere Wikipedia page tbf. Nothing about Lovelace.

I'll agree that the names are placeholders, but they very strongly imply that Nvidia is keeping the Ampere architecture, otherwise they would have called it something else entirely on the roadmap.

There's a pattern, everytime a new generation is released, some people claim the next generation will be something totally awesome, e.g. a whole new architecture. More often than not, this turns out to be false.

For all we know, Nvidia has extensive plans for Ampere, why would they need a new architecture if this is the case?

Ampere was already a pretty large jump in raw GPU processing power, why would Nvidia need a whole new architecture for 2022-2024?

It's possible we might hear more about Lovelace in the future, but there's still no confirmation from Nvidia that they are even working on this (or any other new graphics architecture).

The lack of rumours or credible information regarding 'Ampere Next' suggests that no one outside of Nvidia knows what their plans are for the Ampere architecture. That's why we keep seeing vague rumours about architectures such as 'Hopper' and 'Lovelace'.

I'm a bit sceptical that Nvidia will need a counter punch to Intel's Arc graphics cards, because the performance target for the top XE card, according to recent slides (the origin may or may not be Intel), is still the RTX 3070 and 6700 XT. What they will need to do though (if Intel's cards can be produced at scale), is produce a lot more mid end cards to compete (RTX 3060 - RTX 3070).

Current rumours suggest the Arc Alchemist cards will utilize GDDR6 (not GDDR6X) VRAM, so I think the top Alchemist card will be a bit slower than the RTX 3070 TI.
