Amplifier question - Technics

Gut feeling is it would be a downgrade, but it might still be worth buying.

Many moons ago I worked in retail. The company had a purist Hi-Fi dept (Linn, Pink Triangle, Naim, Creek, Marantz, MF, Mission, Denon, Aiwa, A&R Cambridge etc) and a department selling Technics and Kenwood stacks and separates. Every now and then we'd take some of the Technics and Kenwood gear up to the Hi-Fi listening rooms. Kenwood usually beat Technics except for the better cassette decks. Neither brands' amps could do music like a basic £120 Creek. Admittedly though I had moved on to Broadcast AV sales before the SU-A900mkII hit the scene. That's one of their better amps, and I still firmly believe that a decent sub-£600 integrated amp matches or beats a separates combo of similar price.

What's surprising to me is the endurance of the Technics fan base. Ebay prices indicate that people are willing to pay a premium for the brand that (IMO) outweighs its performance. If the pre/power combo is really cheap and in decent condition then you could buy, try, and punt it out again and possibly make a tidy profit.

Hi I know what you mean about technics on eBay, the prices are ridiculous at the minute. I have been collecting/repairing/re selling for about 2 years now and never lost a penny. I may just stick with the A900mk2 tbh
The reason I wanted a technics amp is to match the high end CD player/tuner and tuner I have
