Hi Folks,

I have got DOW2 and am trying to play it online. I haven't really played much of the single player campaign as I found it a bit boring at the start.

I didn't play the first DOW and am struggling to make much headway online.

I have tried marines and tyranids and I just can't seem to get the balance right. From the off I go straight for one of the larger command points and a power point. I build a couple of cheap units with my 500 resource points I have at the start and then just go and get as much stuff as I can. I find though that I get to a point where I am trying to defend my points with what little troops I have and end up losing loads/ all of them and then have to play catch up while the opposite are taking the points I have gained.

I think maybe I am spreading my troops out a bit and maybe there's safety in numbers but then I'd struggle to get all the points and so be able to buils more troops.

Do you have any tips to someone just starting out in the game?

RETREAT, RETREAT, RETREAT!

Never lose a squad, always retreat it before it dies. Far cheaper to replace dead members than to buy a new squad.

Don't lose your commander. If you lose him early its a big hit. Retreat before he dies. Be back at full health in no time mooching in your base.

If you're using Orks I usually start out with something like Slugga, Slugga (the ranged one is a bit crap), and then 2x Stikkbomba (or 1x Stikk and Earlier Tankbusta if the opponent doesnt have much troops) when I get the req or whatever its called now. I generally also roll with the Mekboy, first upgrade I'd grab would be the Mines, once you get it just start littering VP's with them every time the cooldown is up. Also rather handy to chuck at a dirty cheatin' heavy bolter squad thats giving your orks a headache, knocks em down and they have to re-setup. Throw Mines > Wait for explosion > Charge when they go boom > Hit waagh button on run in. Oh yes, Waaaghed-up Sluggas will rape any commander. Even that irritating healing **** of an apothecary.

Did I say retreat yet? ;)

I have seen a few people make similar mistakes in their approach to this... stop trying to defend points, constantly be pushing out to cap more / harrasing key points of your enemy.

I blame the AI really for this, it seems to dedicate all of its time to having its squads in every corner of the map ninja capping the things you're furthest away from in a disgustingly algorithmic fashion... players just don't do this at all and if you've practiced by countering the AI's ninja style then most players will just mop you up on their rampage around the map.

Another tip then is just be very mindful of your opponents setup and do nothing but counter it (knowing counters pretty much only comes with experience and seeing what troops work or don't work against others etc) ... just never get into a set "I must build unit x now" for whatever reason.

Here's one rookie mistake I was making! I thought capturing statgic points also go you resource points (more than the smaller resource points). I was making an effort to get 2 at the start and an electricity point that I was neglecting the resource points and so was finding it difficult to build units!

One thing I want to know is does holding a resource point for longer give you more resources? I capped one and it said +10 above it but a bit later I'm sure it said +15. It doesn't mention this in the manual

dow2 is closer to company of heroes than it is any of the original dow games...

Ok your playing a 1v1 as the space marines yes?

It is all about power, have both ur commander (i recommend the force commander for a newbie as he is the easiest to use) and ur scout unit cap 2 power points near to each other. If you are playing against anyone but the nids then i suggest you build a devestator squad first, play agressive with it and have it push up with ur commander so that anything he attacks will be supressed as well as giving him cover when he is capping resources... Also use the battle cry in every engagement, this will make ur commander do a critical hit every time.... which pwns :D

Second unit out should be a scout, have him go to the other half of the map and try to cap whatever he can, its good to give the scout a shotgun as soon as you can afford it as he will be all alone and needs to be able to defend himself.

By now you should have capped a few power resources, upgrade your most secure power point (usually the one closest to your base) and get about buying another unit.. depending on your play style and opponent this will either be a tactical squad or an assault squad (tacs are better in the long run, assault are good if your opponent is winning and will have armour before you, or if they are using a lot of weapons teams).

After this unit tech up to tier 2 and guy a plasma devestator squad if you have taken a good chunk of the map and want to defend, or a dreadnought if you want a bit more offensive.

After this its all about upgrading your commander (thunder hammer, first armour, teleporter is my favourite combo), buying the upgrades for your tac squad(flame against nids and orks, plasma against eldar and other space marines), and basically pinning your opponent in his base

A final thing to add in like the first sentence i said use this tactic against anyone other than the nids ... against the nids your first unit should be a tac squad, you want to give him a flamer as soon as possible, your second unit can be a dev squad if you want, but you need to look after him more as the nids have a lot of ways to beat a weapon team... they dont have much of a way to get them out of a building so if there is a building nearby put him in that.. try to keep your tac squad out of melee to make most use of the flamer, have your commander engage everyone.. as has been said fall back (only retreat if you have to) from any battle you cant win.. i dont bother giving my scouts shotguns, the scouts are a poor choice against the nids, have them going around capping constantly and flee as soon as anyone pays them attention.

Hehehehe this should do for now, if u dont know of it already gamereplays.org is a very good site for more information

In the patch at the end of the beta they implemented this ... resources will get better the longer you hold them.. Also of course you can upgrade your power to also give additional resources

Yes, should also point that the more troops you have the slower your req income, it isn't always good to just max out on pop cap at any available opportunity.

Im looking for co op partner coz all my co op partners start to play wow n stuff :(
Marines I Use The Apothecary hero, suppression squads and shotgun scouts, you make the supression squads setup nearby your vp's, then upgrade to lvl 2, then you plant plasma cannon troops behind them, once youve reinforced all points with those 2 types of guard (im assuming youre in victory point control and youre team isnt teh suck) upgrade to level 3, buy dreadnaughts and jump troopers so you can poon!

with apothecary get the sanguine chainsaw, armour of the apothecary and the Purification Rites (seems to be best outve the 3 medicy ones) and level him to 10, hes pretty decent against tanks with the chainsaw lol

What's the screenshot button for this game? Tried all the F-keys to no avail... and no, PrntScrn doesn't work either (unless done manually).

Cheers,

Suman

I think people who had followed the development or aren't too fussy and just wanted a decent game to play like this.. those who hadn't followed the development but wanted DoW 1 with a gfx overhaul got a nasty surprise, but it was apparent a year ago from developer statements it wasn't going to happen so more fool them really.

the single player was good but i eventually noticed that all missions were samey, using the same maps but backwards, it was always kill this carnifex or defend this thing, i did loads of defense missions then got told they are infinite on the dow2 forums, then i did the last mish tonight, epicly boring and not very good ending, didnt even get the achievement for finishing it!
sigh.
