I'd second Trillian. There's currently version 3.1 & a brand new re-write called Trillian Astra in the pipeline.

Ad & spyware free too!

Although it's getting old now, and isn't updated for the latest msn features (has trouble accepting new contacts, file transfers and keeping up to date with contact info) it beats even Live Messenger for me.

Astra should be even better, can't wait :D

Big fan of the free and open source gaim, where you can have all your contacts from like 12 messenger programmes in the one.

Trillian is shocking, well the last time I used it at least. Is it still ugly?

agreed, deffo the best. uses hardly any RAM too.

Thirded :D

Tried this before i did a fresh install and loved using it, keep meaning to reinstall it. But as Tauren said it aint resource hungry and is totally customizable to fit with your desktop theme (which is the type of thing that i like ;) )

pfftttt

I'm telling you guys it's all about Gaim.

edit:

Although I would agree with Miranda for portability, simply 'cause I haven't used Gaim for that purpose.

outside vote for meebo.com

Very handy webbased messenger program, works on anything and just have it in tab in IE7 or Firefox

Ive got MSN live, but it seems Gaim might be the best choice for me. Thanks! :) Now to remember all my passwords...

is it just me or does everyone here seem to have C2Ds with 2GB+ of ram and still worry about resources used by simple things like an IM client?

If A looks and feels better than B, who cares if A uses 150k more ram than B?

I'm looking to use an all in one program, but I can't find anything that allows me to close down skype, msn messenger, google talk completely yet have my accounts open. :(
