An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Weirdly there might be a memory leak at 4K which isn't happening at 1440p for some reason but not sure it is the game itself - I've been playing about a bit and I can play for hours at 1440p without any performance issues but 4K is degrading over time slightly but that is carrying over to desktop even after I quit the game the mouse feels like 30Hz on desktop and you can see it isn't moving smoothly and other games have compromised performance even after a forced GPU driver restart, weird.

I am on 576.02 drivers though:

"The NVIDIA 576.02 driver, while generally stable, has been reported to have a significant memory leak issue, leading to performance issues and crashes, especially during extended gaming sessions."

So I probably should stick the hot fix on there and try again. Fortunately I've not had any of the driver issues with my 4080 Super which is plaguing some 5000 series owners.
I didn't actually think about driver updates since I rarely play games that require them. I'll have to update my AMD drivers and see if anything changes.

The behaviour you have described is exactly what I am seeing as well.

I couldn't get back into it when it was released so not sure why I thought I would do it this time lol.

I was hooked when it first came out.. But I've got as far as killing rats and the loading screen for EVERY door, including a tent is just a chore.

Sure what do I expect being a Bethesda game, but when you've played games like Kingdom Come 2 or Baldurs Gate 3 you expect more lol :D

Haven't and won't play KC2 but BG3 was a damn high standard of writing and stuff. Probably also unfair to compare recent games to Oblivion, but I get the point.

The loading screens for a tent did make me laugh - for some reason I don't recall that from playing it back in the day.

The world does seem a lot more empty than I recall from 2006 for some reason, shame they've not fixed a lot of the common bugs like Savlian Matius charge the courtyard issue, several of the mage's guild recommendation missions, etc. which you'd struggle to get past without Google.

I wouldn't say the game was boring though.

Not boring but very empty, I am awaiting mods before I go any further.... Hoping for something to add NPCs at least.

yeh im finding the world a lot more empty than i remember, still enjoying it though :)

with the return of fsr and frame gen to the gamepass version the stutters are gone that i was having on native and its running great.

is there any way to store items for later use?, my memory of 20 years ago is a bit hazy lol

I'm using Frostcrag Spire as a temporary storage dump. :)

ah awesome i unlocked that place but i wasnt sure i could store stuff without them disappearing :D woohoo thanks :)

Dropped item persistence in the game is a tricky one outside of safe containers - some places like houses (i.e. the priory houses) things will remain if dropped or put in containers indefinitely but will reset if a mission takes place there or certain NPCs spawn who'll pick them up. A lot of other places things will reset at random.

Outside of containers in houses you own (and certain exceptions) nowhere is completely safe - dungeons, etc. will eventually reset, places where missions or events spawn will reset when they are triggered, etc.

One of the things I dislike about the game as standard unless you play as certain builds the carrying amount is too meagre to be fun especially at earlier levels.

Also, regarding Frostcrag...

Yes, generally, items dropped in Frostcrag Spire, a player-owned house in Oblivion Remastered, will stay there. However, items dropped in public locations or outside of player-owned houses may disappear after a period.

Why your items will likely stay in Frostcrag Spire:
  • Player-owned property: Once you own a house, like Frostcrag Spire, items you drop on the floor or in containers within that house are generally safe.
  • No respawn: Unlike public locations, items in your player home won't be reset or disappear due to the game's respawn mechanics.
  • Safe storage: You can even use the floor of your house as a storage area without worry.

The quote is from the internetwebz AI so it must be true! :D

Was playing away and just wasnt feeling it, installed avowed via game pass pc again and as much as avowed is not amazing it still has very good combat imho.
Dont ask me about story, i mainly play for gameplay and Avowed certainly feels good in that department.
Ofcourse its unfair to compare to a really old game but i just cant do Oblivions combat and gameplay anymore.
