I have an interesting idea for the shop as it relates to the forums. Many people, including myself, like to specify parts for people seeking assistance. A popular method of displaying the spec on the forums is to take a screenshot of the "Your basket" page. This provides a nice list of all the individual parts, quantities, and prices, in a clear fashion along with a picture of each for illustrative purposes and the grand total including tax and shipping.

It would be great if the shop site utilized this proclivity to help potential customers by making their shopping experience easier. It would be great if, instead of a static screenshot, forum posters could post a more interactive list. On the "Your cart" page there would be a clickable button for "Get vB code." Users would click this link and be presented with a text box in which vB code appears for the spec that exists in that user's basket. The user would copy this and paste it into a post and the forum would render all the images and links. They could appear the same as they do now. The images could be dynamic using some basic PHP scripting, updating to reflect pricing changes either live or as a cron job.

This is the sort of thing I'm thinking about:

What do you folks think?

Think its been menchened before and could work. But yoiu need to edit the title telling an ocuk shop member to come look at it or they may just glance over it.

I think they should add it in. One vote from me :)

I like the idea, but I wonder how much work it'd be. In the end it'd probably be more work than ocuk would be willing to put into it. If someone could work out a way to build it themselves (somehow) then we might be able to get them to implement pre-existing code...

It would take a lot of work to do.

I think it would take up an awful lot of space on the OcUK servers.

Think, every 'spec' me thread that someone posts in with a Get vB code box has to be stored on the OcUK Servers, unless the list is pushed into a flat file giving a plain output.

Hah, look at my pc spec...it takes too long to boot up psCs2 on this!

Paint is fine in a jpeg for screenies ;)

Ouch, dont you feel small in this forum full of monster machines? Tehehe :p(mines only a 3500amd 1gb of ram etc at the moment. But i hope not for much longer yay :)

So what brings you to ocuk? Perhaps you are planning a new build soon?

Yup. I've been reading the forums for the last 3-4 months, and only recently i've gotten an email other then hotmail so i could actually join!

Got around £800 i'm gona be spending on christmas, and i just like everything to do with computer hardware :p interests me...

Paint can save as .png which is just dandy for screenshots. A .gif compressed with the LZW algorithm is even better for lossless file size, but Paint always uses a nasty dithering algorithm.

*scratchs head and wonders if you are infact supporting the use of photoshop or saying paint is better.*

Hah any help here is greatly appreciated.
Also, it's probably the wrong place to ask, but how many posts until i can see the MM?

Always wanted to see what people up for sale and prices there..ha..

EDIT:Don't worry., Found it =) 250 and 90 days...

That looks like a pretty nifty feature, I like it although I don't know how much additional space/load it would put onto the OcUK servers or whether it would offer enough of a business incentive. :)

Nobody in their right mind would say unconditionally that Paint was better than PS. All I was saying is that .png, which Paint handles just fine, is a good way to save screenshots, especially if you don't have a more feature-rich program or if you don't feel like waiting for the more feature-rich program to start.
