An important decision to make....

I am due to graduate in June of this year, and as most people have (or should ) be doing, I've been applying like mad to various companies that interest me. I recently interviewed for a company in London, and have been offered a job starting in September. It is a fantastic position in a reputable company, with an excellent starting salary. Also, given the competitive nature of the IT industry, I know I've been lucky to have secured such an opportunity. I really believe I would enjoy working there, and the impressions I got from my visits there have been high .

However, like the majority of people, it's been my dream to travel when I graduate, and as the starting date for this position is September (non-negotiable), this is at conflict with my plans.

So I guess the question I'm asking is this. Do you think I should accept the job at the expense of travelling and then live to possibly regret it in the future, or should I pass up on the opportunity and go travelling. I think I'm going to have quite an important decision to make in the near future, and I'm looking for any opinions or stories of people who have been faced with the same predicament.

Dont you have a couple of months between graduating and september? can you not do a little travelling then?

Yes, around 3 months. Though a daft date for the graduation ceremony sort of cuts that time in half :\. Could skip it I suppose...

If it were me back then, I would have taken the job.

If it were me now, I would go on holiday.

Yeah that's the problem I'm stuck with. At this point in my life (aged 20), I know I've been very lucky to be offered this job, and it would be rather foolish to pass it up. However, I'll probably end up thinking like you when I'm older and live to regret it. Oh well, not exactly a bad problem to have, at least I've got something lined up!

More and more people are taking gap years when they are older so it might be something to think about.

That's true, I am just scared of hitting 30 and having regrets about all the things I wanted to do in my life. All it will need is some damn woman to come along, and the whole plan will go **** up !

That's what I'm leaning towards. Just rang my Mum, and she seems to think that's the best course of action as well. Then again, she was probably the one who came along 25 years ago and ruined my Dad's ambitions to galavant around the world !
