An interesting story of hardware failure.

So recently I have had a bad spell of hardware failure.
Firstly my Strix z370e mobo died after one year of use, later confirmed by Asus as i got a full refund, then days later my Strix 1080ti died, but as this was water cooled they wouldn't warranty it!
I replaced the z370e with an F as the E's were all out of stock and i don't use WiFi anyway, to replace my 1080ti I got an RTX 2080ti Founders edition..... which died after 4 days of use, later confirmed by Nvidia as I got a full refund no questions asked.

A good friend of mine has just upgraded his OS drive to an M.2 970 evo, bought a new Asus Thor 850w PSU and a Strix 2080ti OC.
He has been using his upgraded rig for over a month now and today I got a call saying his PC wouldn't boot, we had only just come off of ROE, so what gives?
It wouldn't even allow him into the bios, all three of his screens were just blank, but his mobo lights and peripherals were all on and lit up.
At this point and with my issues with both bad mobo and 1080ti/2080ti I feared the worst.

I told him to unplug all cables except his kbm and his primary monitor, still nothing.
I told him to remove the gpu, unplug all SSD's/HDD's and remove one stick of ram and plug in the HDMI in to his mobo, still nothing.
I told him to clear cmos (remove battery) and switch ram sticks, still nothing.

At this point he was getting very worried, talking about new mobo/cpu/ram.
He said he was going to leave it all unplugged and removed both sticks of ram, and battery again, and was going to make a brew and leave it for a bit.

I got a call about 30mins later, he had plugged everything back in put the battery back, gpu and ram he put all the monitor cables back in and BLAM it was booting, albeit his third right hand monitor wasn't being detected, device manager showed no errors, so whats going on?

His three monitors consist of a 1920x1080p 60hz, 2560x1440p 144hz, 2560x1440p 60hz , the middle monitor is his primary, the other two are for OBS/discord/voicemeeter etc.
His left hand 1080p runs on HDMI, the middle 1440p 144hz runs on DP and the right hand 1440p 60hz runs on DP.

I told him to switch cables with the right and middle monitors and the right still wouldn't display out so I said use an HDMI and see if its the port in the monitor.
Well blow me it worked, it looks like the port on the right hand monitor has failed.

Unfortunately its an older monitor and cant display 2560x1440p using HDMI so he will have to settle with 1080p, I said I would rather settle for 1080p than a new monitor or new cpu/mobo/ram for that matter.

TL;DR Check everything including cables and ports, it might not always be what you think it is.

It was a dell, it did well, bought in 2013, so not a bad run.
I don’t buy asus for any other reason that it’s what I know.
TBF to asus it’s the first time anything has happened with their goods.

Asus is as much about hype as quality than any brand.
Their motherboards had some horribly bad chipset coolers with fast failing fans 15 years ago.
Myself changed it twice to one motherboard during warranty.
I think went for fanless aftermarket heatsink after third failure, because it was tiring to contact their support for new HSF.

As another example despite of all the hype ROG Strix B450-F Gaming hs total garbage VRM which should be treated as failure.
It literally can't handle stock Ryzen 2700X.

They make a good bios though, imo at least. And my Maximus X Formula chipset stays very cool, even without running water to the block.

Generally though it’s all just hype and most of it’s made in big factories.

What did surprise me is how many of the new Turing cards are failing, about which I wouldn’t be surprised if Nvidia knew about prior to launch.
