I've had an itch to do another upgrade for a while now, and if I go ahead with it my current gear will be going into a spare case for Dad to finally drag him out of the depths of despair that manifests itself as a pentium D 661.

This is what I'm hovering on,

Going to use my current nero s cooler, hdd's, 4670, psu and case.

Any suggestions/critique?

I'd agree with Shadow. Remember you can still OC the i5K on the retail cooler (4ghz is expected), you get free delivery so you could add a much better heatsink later.

Unless the OEM version of the i5K is much cheaper than the retail one then you can usually squeeze a good air cooling heatsink in with the price difference (gelid tranquillo is a popular choice). Obviously it's easier to do the job once than dissassemble the rig to apply a heatsink later.

SLI/Crossfire aren't a concern, the 4670 is all I need.

I've had a good look for a cheaper board and the only other options that give the sata ports I need (more than 6, I need more storage) are the
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3/UD4 or the Asrock P67 Extreme 6, sadly both makes I've had nothing but trouble with before.

The nero s is working perfectly for me currently, and most importantly, it's silent, is a different cooler really needed?

The oem chip is only £12 cheaper, but I might switch to it.

The ssd is the one thing that I'm not really sure of, I don't really need one, but they appear to be the way to go. I've been running off the 200GB samsung for 4/5 years now, so it's ready for retirement. I've leaned toward the corsair as it seems to be one of the more reliable ones from what I've read.

If you've had issues with others motherboards, fair enough, but I will say ASUS don't have a UK RMA base I don't think, so if you do have problems its a pain to get a replacement, Gigabyte does, not sure about Asrock. That being said, in my experience, Asus make good stuff.

if your currently cooler is okay, and has 1155/1156 socket fittings it should be fine. You can always get another later if you feel the need.

SSD, most people recommend getting one if you can :) As for choice, the Corsair or Crucial M4 are the best I think in terms of reliability, but the Crucial is considered best (slightly better performance I think) but you pay more for it.

Having had another look through the boards I could drop to the UD3P and save £40, it wasn't a contender at first as it's listed as only having 6 sata ports until you go to the main product description which reveals it has 8.
I could even drop to P67 but, meh...

Yeah my nero s does have 1155/1166 brackets so going to stick with it.

Outright ssd performance I'm not fussed with, so happy to save the £30 and lose 8GB with the corsair over the crucial.
