Hi Guys,

I have a CM Storm Scout case and i have an odd issue with the side panel fan.

If i have it as an exhaust you cant hear a thing its amazing :) but the only thing is i want that as an intake, now when i switch it to an intake it makes a really annoying buzzing nose, it isnt vibrating at all from what i can see but im not sure what else could be causing this?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yeh i have swapped the fan around about 4 times from exhaust to intake and the same issue happens.

I have tried different fans aswell because i thought it might just be the fan but no luck :(

Could it be the plastic venting on the side causing this problem?

Before I drilled the holes in the top this case ....

The whole top vibrated because the top was so close to the cpu fan the airflow made it resonate .

If you put your finger on the perspex slots of the case side does it stop ?

Is there any ducting on the other side of the fan that could be resonating or vibrating ?

If i put my hand over the grills the noise dampens but doesnt fully stop.

Also, there is nothing the fan is hitting against apart from the Heat pipes from my 480.

As above, you need to figure out what is vibrating, check any mesh or thin panels.

I could well be that when the side fan is an intake you've got a significantly +ve pressure case and something else starts to wobble as the air moves past it.

The fan is against the heatpipe of the 480? If this is the case then that's the problem. With the fan set to intake the rear of the fan motor casing is flush with the frame of the fan and so sitting against the heatpipes. With the fan set to exhaust, the centre of the fan will sit a couple of mm below the frame and should clear the heatpipe. You then would'nt get the noise when set to exhaust but would for intake.

I have had a fan on my Scouts sidepanel and it did'nt make any noise other than a bit of airflow noise.

I had a similar problem with a CM case, solve it by applying a bead of silicone sealant the edge of the fan before fixing to the case.

Waited about 30 minutes to allow sealant to go slightly cured before tightening fan fixings screws,

Could have bought silicone gaskets, but at about £3 a time works out expensive.

it isnt touching the heat pipes if thats what you mean. The air is being blown onto the heatpipes is what i meant.

Sorry for the confusion

One other possibilty to consider is a loose bearing thingy in the fan. I've had these cause clicking noises if the fan screw holes (on the case) are a mm or two displaced, so when you screw it in the fan casing is bent slightly, easing up when you loosen the screws. Not sure if the orientation of the fan matters.

You should try having the fan on the case and gradually unscrewing it, then removing it, and seeing at what point the noises disappear. That should isolate it to the fan or the case.
