An odd problem with my internet connection

Hi guys,

I’ve recently started getting an odd problem with my BB:

I often get the “page cannot be displayed” error, and any attempt to open any website, even after a browser restart, still gives the problem.

When I get this error I can ping my router (Linksys WRT54GS v6) and other PCs on the network, but I cannot ping a web address, www.google.co.uk for example – iirc it states the host cannot be found. Incidentally, other PCs on the network also get the problem, all are connected on wireless G with Linksys cards.

Anyway, fast forward to the next time my BB works and I start a looping ping to said internet address, and continued browsing, after a while I got the problem again, but my looping ping was still replying, so I tried to open Google in IE and Opera and get “page cannot be displayed” – even though the ping is ok. So I try the IP the ping replies from in the address bar and voila, I get Google!

The problem is pretty regular, and lasts several minutes, but is recently harder to clear, resulting in me having to reset the cable modem and router.

So, my question to anyone in the know, any thoughts as to what may be causing this, I hope it’s just the modem, as I will have NTL replace that?

Cheers,
Scort.

It's possibly your router, but almost certainly an issue with DNS.
If your modem was kaput, you wouldn't be able to access the IP either.

Bugger, I hoped it wouldn't be that, as I'll probably end up changing all the kit for wireless N now

Hmmmmm, some more investigation needed methinks.

Scort.
