My old PC is well and truly coming to the end of it's natural life.

I've been considering the pre-builds on OCUK with a few minor tweaks. I'm not a hardcore gamer but do enjoy playing sometimes demanding games, currently the likes of GTA, Rust, DayZ, Witcher and upcoming games like Fallout 4.

As a casual player I didn't want to spend too much but hopefully i can still enjoy good performance and visuals! I tinkered around and came up with the following, the blanks (PSU etc) are filled in by the guys at OCUK.

Gigabyte Z97X-SLI Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Intel Core i5 4690K @ 4.2GHz Overclocked Quad Core Gaming PC

KFA2 GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infin8 Black Edition" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-14900C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/Red (HX318C9BRK2/8-OC)

Samsung 120GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E120B/EU

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD

NZXT H440 Midi-Tower - Black / Orange

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02733)

Any insight into what i can expect from something like this?

many thanks

What are you coming from? Will give us a better idea of how big a step up so how much improvement you are likely to notice :)

I'm pretty overdue! Can't remember all the specs as im not at the pc right now but includes ati 5770 1gb, 6gb 1600 memory, not sure which one but its an i5 3ghz, obviously no ssd either

Don't get the 970, you will get much better for the price of that 3.5gb card mate. for example https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-289-MS

thaks, i dont think it was an option for me as would require different PSU as part of the pre-built package but i suppose it could be an option. Will the GPU memory be a geuinely big thing given my interests and level? Side by side the 970 i mentioned seems to have better speeds, but with half the memory.

Depending what it is your CPU may still be perfectly fine, I'm still running an i5 750 which was a first gen i5, though I've overclocked it quite a bit. The graphics card is now very outdated so replacing it would certainly be a good idea, and adding an SSD would make things feel much better too - OK, you'd probably be limited to SATA2 speeds but even so you'd get the SSD feel just not the throughput benchmark numbers. Worth a thought at least :)

Advertising numbers don't mean much. The 390 is reviewed as almost always faster, plus has more memory, though it uses a bit more power and the 970 probably would overclock a bit better if you're up for trying that. Honestly though both cards will be good and a huge leap from your current graphics card - we're just nitpicking.
