Hi all,

Long time sinc ei've been in here asking questions.

I'm considering purchasing a new GFX card (right place i guess :)) anyway, i've found 2 that fall into budget etc etc and wanted opinions.

I'm stuck between the:

My question being, which one. Theyr eboth a worthy upgrade but the machine they will be in runs the following.

Mainboard : Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P
Chipset : AMD 790X
Processor : AMD Phenom II X3 720 @ 3200MHz
Physical Memory : 4096MB (2 x 2048 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card : ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

Comments opinions?

Thanks

H

What is your budget? What games are you looking to play, and at what resolution? What model and wattage is your PSU? And would you be happy to go second hand?

Sorry for the questions, but it makes it easier to help you out :)

i'm happy to spend up to 200 but ideally would like it below that. (the NVIDIA card is sort of top budget).

Current PSU is an OCZ 500watt.

Games, in no order,SW TOR, BF3, Skyrim, WoW, COD,

Second hand.... i'd prefer a warranty but would consider it.

Thanks

H

If 200 quid, I'd go for a 6950 2GB or 560ti 2GB. They have identical performance, so I'd go for the one you can find the best price on :).

You will need 2GB of ram if you are going to be playing BF3 at 1080p :)

the second part isn't quite true, 'im on a 1gb 5770 with a mixture on medium and high settings no msaa, sbao on and medium post ad hit a average of 40fps at 1080p which is pretty darn good, if you want full bells and whistles then yeah believe i read you benefit from 2gb.

edit, the two cards he has suggested are both best bang for buck.

I'd say the 6950 and 560 would be better bang for buck than the 6870, as they come with 2gb of ram which should be more useful in future games :)

Do you have an aftermarket cooler for the 720? If so then overclocking it should help to avoid bottlenecking.

I setup a 550 at 4.2 GHz on air and coupled with a mates 6950 2gb there wasn't a huge drop in frame rates from an i5 750, less than 5fps.

I got to 3.6 and then lost stability so that'll have to do.

Just out of curiosity whats the nvidia equivelant to a 6950?

Thanks

H

The 6950 sits somewhere between the 560Ti and the new 448 core 560. The 570 is more on a par with the 6970.
