OK I have posted this on th Abit forums, but I thought I'd see what you guys could make of it.

I have used a lot of my "spare" gear to try & upgrade the kids comp & I am having serious problems!
It consists of
AN8 Ultra, AMD 3700, Maxtor 80g, and geil pc4400, all runing of a brand new Tagan 430w psu

Apart from the psu all this has worked together as a complete computer in the past.

It starts with posting into windows, but it will not re-start, it hangs with 9.0 on the post code display, but if I clear cmos it would make it back into windows. So I pulled it all out & re-assembled it but this only made it worse, and it wouldnt make it into windows, so I thought I would try a fresh install. This got so far & came up with "page fault in non-paged area" I got over this using only one stick of 256mb Geil golden dragon (this stuff has always been bullit proof for me) Now it will load the windows files, but when it goes to re-start it hangs with F5 on the post code display, this is now with it assembled out of the case to avoid any possible "shorting" problems. I can see nothing obviously wrong with the mobo, no crusty caps or stuff. I am wondering if I have a corrupted bios, or just a dead mobo, or is it something I just havent thought of!
Any thoughts guys?

Well I've now re-assembled the original M/C using MSI K8Neo2, 3000 venice, 9600se gfx,1 stick 256mb geil using the Tagan psu, fans go but nothing else, black screen, so I put the original Aerocool psu, nothing not even fans! using a bridge connector, the psu lights up! I'm at a loss, I'm begining to wonder if I've got a duff Tagan & its taken out 2 mobo's!

So I leave it alone, start posting on here, looking for ways to test psu, and it starts up on its own! didnt get very far though and "encountered an error"! I'll give it error with a big hammer in a minute!:confused:

Well 3 days & I have finally got back to where I started, a working machine with all the original parts in it!

I am having the exact same sorta problems with my AN8. But i get all sorts of POST errors, 8.3. 9.0. (most common) 0.4. Its really starting to annoy me, im so close to throwing it out the window. Sometimes i can get Windows to loads.. well thats after i put a new hard-drive in and re-installed windows onto that harddrive. My other hard drive managed to get some System 32 currupt files.

I swapped and changed bits just like you, and at some point mine wasnt even firing up just like yours wasnt but now its just hanging at 0.4. and a blank monitor.

8.3. - if it hangs there it's almost always a PSU problem
9.0. usually either BIOS (corrupted, unsupported CPU etc.) or power (failing/inadequate PSU, short) related
0.4. is supposedly a memory initialisation problem but it can cover the gfx card RAM as well as that on the mobo. Also been seen related to overtightened/non-standard hs/waterblocks & backplates.

What/how old is your psu?

Hello Buff! you sorted this board out for me on the Abit forums when I first bought it! As my psu is brand new I am going to guess my problem is bios related. but I,m looking for a cheap case to make playing about with it easier, every time I take the kids comp apart I loose acess to mine!

We are talking about an AN8 & not the KN9 in your sig?
Try building it out of the case e.g. on the mobo box.

What PSU is it?

Yes the KN8 is in my main comp its tha AN8 I'm trying to deal with. I did try once with it ( mostly) outside, the mobo etc was on the box. One question about it with every thing outside, how do you deal with the power switch, presumably the mobo has to be earthed to the psu, via one of the standoff holes, but do I have to earth one of the power switch terminals, and "flash conect" the two or will it work just conecting them briefly without earthing one?

MY PSU is a Hiper 560w and is probally about 2 years old maybe less.

But i flashed mobo with the latest Bios and it seems to be running ok now... Why i didnt do that in the first place i dunno.

I have never specifically earthed anything (other than via the PSU of course which is earthed) when doing it.r in r
These days I actually have my own cables, microswitches & LEDs rigged for doing this - you can also buy a similar test kit for ~£8 from an OcUK competitor .

Well i thought i had fixed it but i have got 8.3. again now and its not even firing up. I have tried 2 different PSUs aswell :(

Have you re-newed the cmos battery?

Though 8.3 I think usually implies psu? I know when I first got mine my psu wouldnt run it although it still runs the kids system fine, so there is something about psu's that it can be "picky" about
