Analysts Start to Fear the Worst for AMD.

"Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) had a very poor earnings report this past week, and it shows that the company’s turnaround is one that just is not turning. The wins for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are now behind, and the rest of the company’s efforts are not delivering the expectations that turnaround investors were betting on in 2013 and 2014."

Analysts :

"Despite mix skewing away from lower gross margin gaming in the first quarter, AMD expects gross margin to remain flat quarter over quarter, indicative of PC market uncertainty. Given the significant revenue shortfall and fiscal year trajectory, we have incremental free cash flow and balance sheet concerns as new semi-custom design wins are unlikely to ramp until the second half of 2016. We continue to see little to no earnings power …"

"Despite a challenging macro environment, we believe AMD’s diversification strategy continues to show gradual progress and could position the company for more defensible long-term sales and even profitability should the cost basis be lowered further or new semi-custom deals produce higher margins."

"Ultimately, we believe a strong second half recovery is needed for AMD to fulfill its commitments which looks challenging given competition from Intel & NVIDIA. … While the second half of 2015 is the critical period for AMD, we are increasingly uncertain about 2016 prospects especially around the announced new semi custom wins.

In the past, AMD said sales would ramp in 2016 — which was now clarified to mean the second half of 2016. While console shipments are likely to provide a decent floor in semi-custom business, the average sale price could decline as the console cycle enters its latter stages. … We lower our 2015/16 pro-forma EPS by 41c/47c to -$0.25/$-$0.24. … The high short interest and ongoing semiconductor consolidation wave could limit downside, but we see no fundamental attraction in the stock."

I know it's not exactly relevant to the Graphics Card thread but people are interested about whats going on.

With there being zero news out of AMD for a long time, I would not be surprised if they were in line to merge or be taken over by someone.

They are in for a tough time ahead - if they don't have a successful product launch either CPU or GPU (or other) in the 2nd half of this year I'd be leery of betting what kind of shape they came out of the first quarter next year (often a tough time for many types of businesses).

Mah, AMD are doing just fine, there current line up is still competing with Nvidia.. Yes a 390x line up will be sweet but its clear now AMD is taking there time am sure they in no rush or we would had a rush GPU out by now.
For example a 390x out running Gddr5 would been easier for AMD..

AMD is running is all latest gen Consoles, have the leading APUs GPU at prices Nvidia cant compete in..

I see AMD is in good standing! if they wasn't like I said am sure they would been a re-brand out by now.

I'm sure glad I don't have any share in AMd, anyone who is a shareholder should probably sell up fast or loose it all.

Very sad times, I just see no way For them to get back to their Thunderbird glory days.

I agree.

However they can't run their business on the basis of a "must win graphics card".

If, (insert deity) forbid, they fail, it will be a very very bad thing. Duopolies are not good, monopolies are worse...

We need competition to drive innovation.

I really hope there is not a IP sale now or in the future, unless it is to a company that will take on Nvidia and Intel. If they pick up the IP's then we will all feel the fall out.

I can't help but feel the same way despite the weekly "AMD are doomed" news from investor links etc.

Considering they support the PS and XB, they won't be allowed to have anything disastrous happen.
Plus before Microsoft and Sony would have taken them as their APU/GPU chip supplier for the consols, each would have done their diligence on AMD as a core supplier to ensure that they won';t go under, leaving both products without a supply of chips.

All will be fine with AMD for the foreseeable future, even if they aren't setting the enthusiast CPU and GPU market on fire.

Why do people keep posting the same AMD doom thread over and over?

I find it funny how some people on here think they no the ins and outs of a company.

If AMD was in such bad stance then am sure Sony or MS wouldn't have taken them up on helping build the next gen consoles..

Waiting for Mr Marketing/sales expert from AMD to come along and correct me.

If anyone is playing the expert here shanks it seems to be you.

You're the one who apparently sees them in good standing yet financial figures and market share clearly show they aren't.

What I find funny is how the consoles are always mentioned as some kind of fail safe for them despite people showing in other threads the profit margins are tiny.

From a business perspective they aren't doing just fine, they aren't in imminent danger but they certainly can't be complacent - without a healthy 2nd half to this year they are going to need some serious business strategies next year or have to make some significant changes that might even finish the company.

Why do people keep posting the same AMD doom thread over and over?

Because they've been skating the edge for awhile - for a variety of reasons none the least some seriously good business acumen they've stayed afloat in conditions that would have sunk many other companies by now - I'm not saying they are going under but they are far from out of danger.

haha, they would be better to sit tight at present, are you the Scottish undertaker from dads army by any chance ?:D

Its not that simple (and businesses like AMD have gone under in similar circumstances before) - in 2012 many of their partners, investors, etc. made a statement that if it came to it they would NOT prop AMD up due to the risk to their own companies from doing so in the then economy - things have picked up since then so that fortunately isn't a situation likely to come up next year or otherwise I absolutely would be calling it (EDIT: On the basis of if they didn't have a good end to this year).

No am giving my own view, not set as a fact! am free to do that aren't I?

In my eyes its easy to see, AMD is holding out to build a big GPU with going this new Vram HBM "is it called?" the reason why I feel them very safe is because they could easy just bring out a re-brand.

AMD is in no rush! - Own option! Not facts!
