Just went to Anandtech Bench website to refer to some CPU benchmarks in the other thread and found this - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/GPU/88

Apparently Anandtech has launched the new GPU benchmark database. I haven't noticed it earlier.

It may be useful in comparing some GPU configurations if needed for a quick reference, Anandtech reviews have usually been pretty solid to say the least. Hopefully they will update this database with the latest drivers and titles as well.

Here are the long debatable Radeon 5850 vs GeForce 460 1GB results:

I'm surprised ATI hasn't cut their prices to £190 and £250 for 5850 and 5870 respectively yet. GeForce 480 shouldn't be more than £310 too and Radeon 5970 should be sitting just under £400 (£390). GeForce 460 1GB would settle at £170 and 768MB version would stay at £140. Radeon 5830 going for £130 and Radeon 5770 at £105 tops, with 5750 at £85. Oh, and the GeForce 465 would have to be at £155 mark to sell.

I'm pretty sure we'll eventually see the prices settling like that. Wondering when Northern Islands come down and mess with the market.

According to Gibbo, ATi's cards are still very much in really high demand.

It has to change eventually, Nvidia and its partners made reasonable cuts that make their products equally competitive. For almost a year Radeon 5850 was the best bang for buck card, nowadays things aren't this simple. It's good though, it finally drives the prices down and we're looking forwards to new releases in not that far away future.

They clock quite well as far as raw MHz goes (around 33% increase in core speed) but actual percentage performance gained isn't as good.

Source on this one please. Your statement would be deleted from any Wiki unless proved by the source. It's no so obvious to me that 58** overclock with worse real world results than any Fermi card. Same goes for a widely exaggerated myth about minimum framerates (it may be true for Crossfire vs SLI though, dunno about that).

Lol @Tute being too lazy to manage cables :p

I'm sure the gap was bigger at release - has the HD4870 seen better driver improvements?

No but it's only a few games that are being compared really. Radeon 5830 is more likely in the middle of performance between 4870/5770 and 4890. Then there's quite a gap till 5850.

The 5800 series definitely has an efficiency issue as performance increase over the 4800 series simply does not match the higher specs. A good example is the performance difference between the 4890 and 5870. I'd expect something near double the performance, but in reality it's nowhere near that.

I've got a feeling that the R600 architecture is slowly maxing out.

You're so wrong now. First of all, these results are here for comparison only, you cannot calculate performance difference judging by a few games. Second of all, you should actually compare Radeon 4870 to 5870 (ATI never decided to make 5890, rather jumping straight onto 6000 series ship). And GeForce 470 to 275.

Here are the results:

Lol Freddie, been doing the same thing for some time now, here are the results :p :

radeon5850vsgeforce460.png

Now with Radeon 5850 at £205 ($270 in the US) and GeForce 460 1GB going for £165 ($230), there is 24% extra (17.5% in the US) you pay for 10.5% performance increase (Freddie claims 11%, Techpowerup 12%, etc.). The results in other threads are also pretty consistent thus it becomes harder to recommend Radeon 5850 over GeForce 460 1GB these days (until ATI cards back their prices a little).

Great find, it's really missing a summary though.

I would want to see at the very top a summary of the contest:

Number of benchmark wins, eg 3 vs 5
% performance, eg 5870 100% GTX480 110%

There can't be a summary with so little data tbh, it would be unfair even though we know AnandTech isn't biased at all (or so to speak), the benchmarks are truly limited and are here for comparison only. We would need to collect the data from many sources, perhaps even individuals, to assume the real differences between specific models. Now we have something to base our opinions on, we can fulfil the data if needed and such a site is needed for sure, but cannot be taken as a definite.
