Basically we built our first pc a couple of years ago, and now that our other pc, an older system (a pre-built one) is on it's last legs we've been thinking of building another.

We're not intending to overclock at the moment but still want a system that will last quite a while for games, photoshop and other general use, and can be upgraded if need be in future. Would say £1200 probably the most we'd spend, not including a monitor for now.

I've put a basic spec below, some explanation:
The case, we used a P182 in our first build and are very happy with it. The P183 seemed to be the closest thing to that so we would like to use that if possible, just wondered if there would be any kind of graphics card length or psu fitting issues with what I've put below.

The two hd's, we generally like to have a main drive and a 2nd that it backs up onto each day... was thinking about a seperate drive for the OS, is this worth it? SSD's and the faster hd's seem pretty expensive, is the difference really noticable/worth it?

Graphics, the 5850 seemed like the most reasonable performance/price to get, as supply seems to be a problem for all the cards is there any particular manufacturer I should avoid? or just get whichever happens to be in stock when I come to order? and any ideas when more are likely to be in stock?

Finally Psu, went with a modular Corsair psu on our first build, very happy with how that worked so basically is 650w enough for the spec below and is it likely to allow for future upgrades in a year or two for the graphics etc?

Looks good,Why not reuse your current case, dvd drive and psu? Then with the savings get a SSD

Sorry wasn't too clear, we built a pc with the p182 case which we're still using. We also have another pc we had bought pre-built around 4 years ago now and it's that one we're looking to replace.

Thanks for your reply.

Looks good. Everything is very good quality and will work together fine.

The 5850 will fit in that case very happily (I recently built into a p183 using a 4890 GPU and it fit perfectly - the 5850 is the same length).

The PSU is wonderful and is more than enough for your spec and allows you headroom for upgrades.

As for overclocking, I would strongly suggest you try it out. People regularly get a 50% clockspeed increase (4GHz) with decent aftermarket cooling (like this). If you still don't think overclocking is for you - then maybe a pre-overclocked bundle is worth considering.

Also, I would suggest adding some more fans to that case and possibly a fan controller to keep noise in check.

However, with all this said - what monitor do you plan to get? As one of your primary uses is photoshop, will it be an IPS panel monitor?

Oh ok....Yeh thats fine i would suggest if you dont need to run every game on max on a 24'' + lcd then a 5770 will be more than enough
he doesn't need to, but I reckon he would want to :)

looks like a good build. For 5850s, Sapphire are the cheapest on ocuk at the moment, but out of stock last I looked.

Well currently using a 19' lcd monitor, would like to get a larger one in future when money allows for it but need the system first.

On the other hand the 5770 is £100 cheaper and actually in stock.... hmmm

Thanks for your replies/advice.

Only thing with that is after you've got the second 5770 there's nowhere to go - three cards don't scale well over two. The 5850 would be a better bet, as it'll run all games at max now, and when it starts to struggle again, simply get another, which will last far longer than two 5770s which sit between the 5850 and 5870 performance wise.
