And you think your cpu runs a bit hot in the Summer?

I was out on one of those 'can you come and look at why my PC is running slowly' jobs last night, and to cut a long story short, this lad had an X58 rig with a cpu that had the following temp profile after I installed coretemp:

CPU 1: 95
CPU 2: 97
CPU3: 97
CPU4: 96

I've taken the job on because it's a quick windows re install and a cpu reseat /. clean for £50. The heatsink was absolutely caked, but he said other than it slowing down a bit, he hadn't had any other problems.

Made me think though, I've stressed on the odd occasion when I get 71, and you hear people say in actual fact, it's quite difficult to break a cpu. Just goes to show eh.

don't modern cpu's have hard wired temp cutoffs these days anyway? if you push it too far then bam instant shutdown.

used to have an old athlon laptop would run at idle at 100 degrees, and anything more intense than web browsing and black screen.

It will shut itself down before it can reach a temperature that will actively damage it. Below that, it's extremely difficult to quantify how temperature affects the longevity of a solid state device.

I've dealt with the laptops of several friends running at 100C before. They all work fine after of course but people neglect these things.

If it's an Intel CPU it'll do a number of things such as reducing core clock and voltage or introducing no operation instructions every other cycle to effectively slow the CPU down.

What would you say is a good temperature for a FX 6300 with the stock cooler running Battlefield 4 at ultra and 1920x1080? I think mine was running at around 68 last time I checked and I'm unsure whether that's too high or not?
