I'm liking the look of some of the Android based handsets and I'm due an upgrade on my contract at the moment. But one thing I can't seem to find the answer to is, once you have an android phone can you just keep updating the OS as and when google release new versions ?

On top of that, any hands on feedback on Android would be appreciated, I am especially thinking I'll be using my phone for browsing/ emailing/ IM etc.

cheers

Yes you would get updates but that would depend on when your network was to OTA (over the air) it to you. 1.6 Donut has just started to be OTA'd by Vodafone here in the UK a week or 2 behind the US.

Of course, and depending on what phone you were to get, you could use custom versions of the OS. I, and others ont his forum, have been using the latest version of Android, 1.6 Donut, a month or so earlier than the official release as we are using custom roms by non Google devs (just like any kind of beta, as that's what it is, there can be a few instability issues).

As for Android itself, well you'll always get your fanboi's in all camps. Some love the iPhone to obsession but us sane ones love Android to obession.

The browser is excellent, as excellent as any smartphone browser can be when your used to using a 24" monitor, and IM works well (I use eBuddy for my IM needs) and you have the choice of Google mail, which you can use to collect all your normal email accounts mails, and other emailing options.

I ♥ Android

Thanks for this Elliot, very useful. You don't seem to be the only one who thinks a lot of Android many things I have read about it suggest its very good. I think this seals it for me, Android here I come.

Android is a great OS but after having the Magic and now selling it as its sitting in a corner gathering dust...it really needs to mature a bit more...i found the more apps i put on the magic the slower it got.

Perhaps next yr or the yr after ill have another look at Android but at this present time and moment im giving it a miss...saying that they have some really nice phones coming out with some great hardware.

Well, as you say there are better handsets now and on the horizon and the Magic was pretty much the second Android device released
