Have a look around and see what you can get the HTC Legend for. I've seen it for £20/m without even trying, and since it's kinda the successor to the Hero it would be a better bet.
 
All updated to froyo now, love it. Just wish there was a way to change the trackball pulse light colour for the native SMS app.

Paul @MoDaCo should have Trackball Alert Pro fixed for Froyo soon, as read from his Twitter, well worth the purchase imo.

I'm noticing that too, my battery usage while idle with the screen off is what I'd expect to get from medium to light usage over the same period when running a custom 2.1 ROM :( Still, this will improve when the dev's start releasing their streamlined versions of 2.2
 
Going to read through this thread later, however -

Is it possible to get a Nexus One (so stock) FroYo working on the Desire yet? If not, will it be possible in future (without SenseUI), wouldn't mind trying it is all :p

Funny you should say that mate as i just have arrived home with a spanking new HTC Legend :)-£20 pm with 300mins/unlimited texts/unlimited internet....Very happy....So will i be able to upgrade to 2.2?......Also anyone got any recommendations to what apps etc i should get as its my first Android (Wont be my last now) Thanks guys for your help

Except for the fact that HTC have said that all of their smartphones released in 2010 should get 2.2 this year. That includes the legend :)

The legend is also better than all the other options he was looking at :)

I'll edit this to say Modaco is working on a Desire port, so a legend port may not be far behind :)
