Android 2.2 (Froyo)

sorry, i've not been following this thread

am I right in thinking that 2.2 is still in beta? and when it's released I'll be able to update without having to root my phone?

2.2 is released.

If you have the N1 then you can update your phone.

If you have anouther Android phone (HTC for example) then there is a good chance your going to be waiting a good while.

I wish HTC would have sense as optional so if you want sense you wait for it, if not update away (Well faster then there current rate anyway)

Thats one advantage the iPhone has over Android, with it pretty much being the same device you just plugin and update when it's released, not wait months for a third party to butcher the rom

The OTA was, it seems, not supposed to be released, or at least not to the public.

A final update should arrive over the next couple of weeks, however the current one is fine, only a few minor bugs

Yeah, however the splendid fellows at Modaco can bring you 2.2 in a more stock form well before HTC, then you can just add the Sense UI back at a later date when HTC sort it out.

I'm hoping for it next week or so :p

i had a quick play with a bad port for the hero last night, it was quick and looks pretty cool, hopefully with most of the devs at xda forums pulling together il have a 2.2 hero soon .

TBF they've played it quite well, they now have a big user base of people who want to be beta testers because only that sort of person has flashed the ROM manually :)

I personally don't care when 2.2 ROM is released, 2.2 source code is far more important with regards to making custom ROM's :)

I read an interesting article that suggested that the N1 was never really meant to sell well. Instead it was Google raising the bar so to speak, ie releasing a whole with XYZ means that everyone else has to match/better that

That would make sense. It was the first second-generation Android handset after all, and has paved the way for a whole raft of Snapdragon phones.

Dammit, I want Cyan 6 based on Froyo! Running a (mostly) stock ROM makes me feel like an unrooted n00b :(

Have you not rooted Froyo then? Fail :p I've used cyan's root patch and have all my lovely root apps back :D It almost compensates for the lack of trackball wake and the custom notification colours

I flashed Paul's 2.2 ROM, root seems to be present and correct. I didn't think anything else was necessary? I just mean it's a mostly stock ROM and the lack of trackball stuff and other bits and bobs is, well, lacking :D

Manually updated my non-rooted Nexus One to 2.2 and wow... it's fast :) . Remaining RAM after killing all apps has gone from ~80-90mb up to ~220-230mb. It's noticeably faster loading up apps and the flash player seems pretty decent, especially considering its in "beta".

Why wait? You don't need to root your phone to update and the file originally came from google. The only reason you're waiting is because they decided to stagger the OTA launch and the UK isn't very high up the queue :( . I've done it with no issues, took about 5-10mins.

Haha, I'm not waiting, I've got a HTC Desire rooted and I've been trying the Froyo one out.

However, the version you've just put on your N1 (while being stable and good), is still not the official release so a few things may be changed yet, the Desire version still has a few bugs to be ironed out but that will happen almost immediately once the offical files/source are released :)

Thus why I asked!

I know that, it's probably not true though. Would be nice however :p

I just want the stock Froyo ported over, fancy a change from the "blackness" of the Sense UI :D

Would love to do this to my non-rooted Nexus One, but the link to the download page no longer works :(.

XDA developers will have the link for it somewhere, you need to manually download it, put in into the main directory of your SD, boot into recovery and job done :) No rooting required :)
