Android 2.2 update for T-Mobile Motorola Defy users released!

what's the point in this and why would you choose it over gingerbread 2.3 (CM7)?

I would rather use the offcial ROM for the time being as the phone is relatively new and within warranty. AFAIK,this is meant to be the sanctioned T-Mobile version. Once the warranty is finished I will have a good mucking around with it.

On top of this I have one of the later Defy models and I did read some of the current aftermarket ROMs were a tad buggy with the newer ones.

How do I get this official 2.2 update?
The link is just for the device software, to which if I install it and then go on software update it asks to choose country - UK (or anywhere from Europe in fact) is not there.

It recognises my phone OK. I installed the software and when the Motorola Software Update is run it says may phone is a T-Mobile UK phone automatically.

I still need to find a utility to backup some of the installed software.

While this is good as HTC did it the right way, Motorola are taking the cheap way out and performing a factory reset it would seem:

You can backup your apps & app data with titanium backup if you have root. I think it's safe to say you shouldn't leave your memory card in the phone when you do this, if Motorola can't figure out how to leave /usr intact I wouldn't be suprised if they wiped /sdcard.

Thanks!! However, I have not rooted the device ATM since I got it recently.

Is there any way to backup the software without rooting?? It seems a complicated way to do something quite simple. Is there anyway to root a Defy without having to muck around copying files??

Edit!!

What about Z4root??
