SGS2 here, shipped with Gingerbread 2.3. After weeks of Kies tormenting me, it finally offered the ICS update tonight. With that now installed, the homescreen selector app is missing. I preferred Orange's layout to Samsung's as I found it looked neater with the uniform orange icons. It's reverted back to Samsung's and I can't the means of changing it. Any ideas please?

I guess it's a launcher?

Go to settings>apps>all tab and find TWLauncher, clear defaults. When you press home it should ask what home launcher you want.

Thanks for the suggestion. Locating that program, press clear data then press home resulted in screen briefly going blank (just showing the wallpaper), then the Samsung homescreen re-appeared in its default state. I think the Orange one is completely shot :( Shame, as I really liked that one. Apps menu was in a vertical scroll-down like with iPhone rather than horizontal, phone icons were uniform orange to reflect the Orange network, you could take screen captures via home+power hotkey and various Orange widgits previously available in 2.3. All vanished now in 4.0.

Oh btw, if you change 1 letter in your user name, that's my real name :-)

P.S. This is the way I want the bottom icons to look - uniform orange without text. That's what the Orange-branded layout looks like. Sorry if I'm fussy, I just like the familiarity and it's not just that screen. It's the Orange behaviour in general like top-down apps menu and home+power for screenshot.

I find Sammy's red/yellow/green/blue with text over the icons with the white dots representing each virtual desktop a bit cluttered and too Tellitubbies-like.

When I go to settings > apps > all > twlauncher, I get:

Force stop
Disable (greyed out)
Clear data
Move to SD card (greyed out)
Clear defaults (greyed out). Sorry I can't take screenshots, as ICS has stolen the home+power feature away.

The links from your link appear to be for Gingerbread 2.3? Maybe I'll need to wait until Orange do further development work for a future release of ICS.

Thanks for your help though buddy. Much appreciated. The name's Benjy :D

why dont you download a custom launcher for e.g zeam launcher - easy to set up and do it how you like?

nope :) get it from the market/play store

i do use ADW launcher

but a lot of people like GO launcher or launcher pro

in my eyes tho Zeam launcher is the simplest one to set up and have everything how you want :) just get the launcher edit the dock, widgets and folder and number of screens you want and be done with it

might take time to set it all at first but i bet it wont be hard.

(I work for Orange) Oh my god I found him, the person who prefers OrangeLauncher over <anything> ;) As far as I know Monserrat (as I don't have a tester around here to check if the files are even there) it's coming back once we fix it for 4.0 but currently it's not been finished so it's default for a bit.

Launcher pro can be made to look a lot like it and is very easy to play with, I'd recommend giving it a shot.

If I were you I'd head over to XDA and grab the beta versions of Nova and Apex launcher... They're both really really good with loads of features :)

And no, they don't need root access either, they just install as any other apk file and then when you press the home key you'll automatically get a pop up box asking which 'home' you want to go to - have a play around with a couple and find which one you prefer :)

Ahhhh nice Enigma! Installed Apex and worked a treat. I now understand that launchers are equivalent to shell replacements in Windows. Never realised it could be done without root.

I've left both Apex and the default Twlauncher as options for the time being. If I commit to one of them by ticking the box, is there an equivalent to Folder Options > File types in Android in case I changed my mind to Nova later on?

Edit: YES!!! Hide icon text (in Apex). I've been waiting for an Android feature like that for yonks, as I identify better by picture/colour rather than text.

Just reset the defaults as detailed in Benjos post for Apex launcher if you commit to one and the next time you press home you'll get the same "what launcher?" prompt you have now.

If you've got apex installed then you can go to apex settings and down to advanced settings and tap on 'set default launcher'

or failing that there's HomeSwitcher on the market that you can use to change between them :)

It's not set in stone once you tick the default box

Gotcha! Thanks Myshra and Enigma :-) Bit of a learning curve, but I have learnt a lot in this thread, the whole idea of an Android launcher as being a shell replacement (something I've known in MS Windows since 1999).
