Android faster when all apps are up to date?

I have Android 12 on a Sony Xperia II which originally came with Android 10. Sometimes the phone is sluggish but I've always had apps on manual updates till recently, so sometimes I go 3-4 months and there are like 90 updates to do.

I've found recently that if all the apps are kept up to date the phone is a lot faster. Am I imagining this or is there a technical reason?

I'm sure you're imagining it . I doubt updating apps makes the phone any faster. I would understand updating the phone firmware and software, but very much doubt updating the apps makes the phone fast.
