Android hangouts

Can anyone advise if hangouts is free for the sending of picture messages on android as sending on textra costing me 20p a time

Depends, if the other person has Hangouts (also on iOS/browser) and you send it as a hangout message, then yes. If you send it under the SMS part then it will charge you at your network rate.

Right thanks for that I'm basically halfway through switching between iphone to android and just realised today I'd been charged for a few picture messages wheras on iphone never did. Ok so if I sent a picture using iMessage it would be free unless going to someone out of iMessage.

Just think of iMessage as Apple's messenger service, which is done via the internet (so like MSN, Skype, etc.). Hangouts is basically the same but without the merged view. You can get your friends with iPhones to install Hangouts if you still wish to send picture messages for free, or use another messenger service.
