Question for those who've made the move to iPhone from previously using Android.

Anything that frustrates you , that was simple on Android ?

Anything you particularly miss from Android also?

I see that it has Swiftkey now which is a big plus, i find i type way faster on that because it's a consistent layout over the years.

Just weighing up a move over and seeing if there's anything that's gonna annoy me tbh

If you buy direct from Apple you’ll have 14 days no questions return. You can then see for yourself as it’s very subjective what people experience when switching.

The built in keyboards does provide swipe typing.

The biggest thing you’ll find is notifications are better on Android. They aren’t bad on iOS but they do take some adjusting.

When you switch make sure you use the Move to iOS app on Android during setup as that allows you the option to migrate WhatsApp messages. It can’t be done after setup is complete.

There are a few things that frustrated me when I made the switch, but I was very quickly very happy to have done so.

1. Firefox. Apple does not allow competing browsers to use their own engines, effectively they are allowed to reskin safari and that's it. As a result you can't use addons and the password autofill is not as good. It still works, but you find yourself having to go into the password manager and copy/paste more often. Plus no ublock. That said, I don't seem to see too many ads either way. "Firefox Focus" also exists on the platform, which does a good job at privacy but is not a full browser.

2. The launcher is the launcher, you can't install another one, you just have to get used to how it works. It's not bad and you can at least have a clock widget these days.

3. For the move itself, there were a couple of annoyances. LiE mentioned whatsapp. If you use signal, there seems to be absolutely no way to backup and restore across android and ios, even though you can do that between phones of either type. Also I find myself using signal a whole lot less because it can't deal with SMS under ios, you have to use their messaging app. Which is fine, it's just a change.

In general though, the switch was 100% worth it. The integrations with my macbook are great. The build quality is a world away from what I was used to with android (crack-prone glass sandwiches that break in your pocket, even in the official case.). And while I kinda have the upgrade itch, my iPhone 12 Pro is actually still pretty damn good, so I'm going to end up keeping it for longer than I did with androids.

It still works, but you find yourself having to go into the password manager and copy/paste more often
I wonder if this is password manager dependant, I forget the last time I had to go into 1Password and copy/paste.

Plus no ublock
I use Wipr which I can only assume works. I don't see any ads when I'm at home because I'm behind a pihole but I also don't see ads when I'm out and about so it must be doing something.

Yep I'll also chime in on the password manager thing. If you use 1Password it has a proper extension for mobile safari which will autocomplete everything including MFA codes. Lastpass (don't use this!) also has an extension. Bitwarden does not.

Could be, I use the built-in firefox stuff manager.

I have no doubt things work better in Safari, but I'm not yet ready to move away from firefox, even not-quite-right firefox on ios, because I use it across windows, linux and macos as well as my phone.

One thing that I don’t like about Apple is that the photos aren’t put into subfolders.

Sometimes I want to delete all of my memes and not have to troll through 5000 photos.

That being said, I prefer Apples integration and ongoing support for phones that are 5+ years old.

I still have a perfectly functional iPhone 8+ as a backup phone that still gets updates years later.

I would only really buy a Pixel phone if I was to go Android but their build quality is terrible with many many people complaining of phones breaking.

One thing I don’t miss about android is delayed gmail notifications. On iOS they are instant 100% of the time.

The nofication system is awful.
I hate that there's a switch to silence it, I used to use geofencing / time for that.
Setting the volume for different things is bad, it seems there's one master volume for alarms and that's it (I used to have different alarms for different volumes for different times of day).
I don't like that some app settings are in the OS's 'Settings' app and some are in the app itself.
The camera isn't as good. I miss the double press of power button to launch the camera.

I'd used Android since 1.5, and always have used mostly Nexus or Pixel and switched to iPhone about a year ago. I miss my Pixel phone, but love my Apple Watch.

Just made the switch at the weekend.

I left for Android after the IPhone 6. Got a little bemused at the price jumps.

Every single phone or my parter’s phone or children’s phone have broken in some way. Various android devices.

The latest was my almost two year old S21 ultra. The phone is mint. Random reboots and shutdowns. Very hard to get turned back on once it’s happens. Might try and get it repaired and sold.

Watched my brother in law lose an extremely large amount of money (crypto wallet lost his keys)because his top of the range Samsung wouldn’t boot up. Can’t be repaired.
Now after seeing that and my phone getting possessed was the enough to send me to Argos and grab the IPhone 13 and Applewatch SE.

I couldn’t be happier atm. That apple feel/experience hasn’t gone away. Opening them boxes was an experience lol

Dislikes so far

I can’t move some apps to the bottom of the screen.

Switching apps. Will take sometime getting used to the new method.

Even after all the time android still feels like sloppy seconds with regards to apps. It’s still clear Apple is the lead platform for development.

It’s like an old friend that’s still very familiar.

Integration feels better.

I even have Apple Pay set up. I never had Samsung or Google pay set up. Dunno why.. so I can’t answer lol

Now I’m not even going to compare my SE watch with the galaxy I had. It’s not even close. I just turned it on and everything was there. Binance, apps I like using and notifications are sweet.

To the dock? What apps and what happens when you try?
No just above it. I would like what’s app and one or two others put there but they keep getting auto arranged to the top.

I want to live that yolo life but now apple is in control and they must think it looks messy.
(That or there’s a setting I haven’t found yet lol)

You can work around it with blank widgets.

Firefox focus (separate from Firefox) seems to work pretty well for me when it comes to blocking most ads in Firefox itself as long as you go into settings and switch it on for content control.

Moved my other half from a godawful Oppo thing to my previous iPhone 12 Pro in October and she's been as happy as Larry with it. Helps that I put her on my Apple Music, connected it via bluetooth to her music centre in the kitchen and sorted her a HomePod, a Mini and a pair of AirPods for various events (birthday, Xmas, a major life event). She's the kind of person who is a nightmare at parties if you let her loiter near the CD/record player as she'll be playing one song from an album then changing it over, leaving big gaps in the music and having to be dragged away from it after a while. Being able to yell at Siri while cooking and avoid getting grease etc on things has made her appreciate her phone and the Apple ecosystem a whole lot more, but it confuses the bejeesus out of me when I think she's calling to me from the kitchen/bedroom/living room and it turns out she's just changing the music over

I use both on a daily basis (iPhone for work, pixel for personal) and neither are perfect. Biggest gripe with iOS for me is the OS itself is pretty terrible - settings for apps strewn across various locations, notifications very poor in comparison to android and quick settings / pull down could be a lot more useful. It generally takes more clicks to do something on my iPhone than it does on my pixel which in itself is pretty massive. Also find it amazing that in 2023 apps still dont scale (as in native ipad apps have to be created else you just have a stretched iPhone app)
On the other hand even though my pixel has a 120hz screen the screen on my iPhone still feels more resonsive / smoother in vast majority of situations. Build quality is undoubtedly better with the iPhone and there is an air of premiumness that exists thats hard to quantify.

So much easier on iOS, either swipe left or right on the bottom of the screen to switch back and forth between apps or swipe up and scroll.
oOOOOoO

I’ve been doing some strange thumb at the bottom of the screen then swipe up and to the left to get the tiles up……….

Thanks lol
