Android/Nexus One: First Impressions

Nothing you've described are native android problems, wifi ALWAYS reconnects for me (and always has on every 2.1 and 2.2 rom I've used, vanilla or custom).

As for the touch screen, either you've got 2 faulty handsets or you've got fingers like richmond sausages and you're just mashing away on the screen.

Or, alternatively, they are documented problems as has already been suggested (and also obvious when google searching).

I have no problems using my iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, Xperia X1, or Blackberry Storm with my fingers, so I highly doubt its me.

With it being 99.5% the same phone as the Desire, and me not liking the style of the desire (buttons at the bottom, what's that all about ), I went for what I knew to be a "good" phone that also had styling I got on with.

Fair enough. :)

FWIW, i thought the buttons were a nice touch, and much preferred the look optical pad over the track ball. And HTC Sense UI was the thing that really swung it. Makes everything so much more sleak.

Just my opinions though!

EDIT: Ahh, just seen, you liked how polished everything was on the iOS. I think the HTC Sense does this for the Desire. Did you try a Desire out Paradigm?

Like I've just said, it's not a native android problem, if it was then my wireless wouldn't reconnect either, my touch screen also isn't faulty as you describe so again, not an android issue but a hardware issue, you understand the difference right?

I will agree with that, if the Nexus One had the option of the trackpad over the trackball that would have been preferable, but the lack of hard buttons is something I got used to with years of iPhone ownership, and something I just prefer.

As for Touch Sense UI, that was swinging it for me until I used both devices. Sense UI seems to add (whilst miniscule, it does add) latency to input, and seems to bog down the phone slightly.

Fortunately with working for envirofone, I get to play with handsets as much as I like before actually committing to one.

Oh, so you are saying the fact that I've used perhaps 15 different access points in different locations is somehow my fault, and not the software's?

You do understand the point... right?

Also search the web, its a common fault.

If it was a native Android problem, it'd affect every handset using that version of Android, which it doesn't, I've used just about EVERY kernel release since the Desire hit the market and I've not once had my wireless not reconnect after sleep.

Look, if you have nothing useful to add, leave the thread alone thanks. It's not my hardware, and it's not me.

You've used nexus one builds of 2.2 have you?

if your not going to accept peoples opinions and suggestions then what was the point in this thread ? theres already a huge 6 month old nexus thread full of peoples reviews and feedback.

I've accepted people's input, but I'm not being told that its my own fault when it blatently isn't.

Anyway, I never asked for a solution, I was just voicing my experiences and comparisons with other platforms.

The only direct question I've asked is for a backup solution/ PC sync suite style application.

I've used several ported N1 2.2 builds but I suppose the rom dev's probably decided to fix this supposed broken Wifi first right?

I can assure you that your problem is not Software.

If it was it would have been sorted a long time ago, the N1 is googles baby after all

Not 100% but does HTC sync not work with the N1?

If not there are plenty of Android APPS that do backups to SD card (apps, msg's, contacts, user data, etc) I use Titanium backup

Not tried, but I'll give HTC Sync a go :)

EDIT: Once I get a serial number off a desire device at work.

Don't bitch about backup problems because they simply aren't there!

Having to root the device to get full granular backup functionality, is a "problem". Having to pay for a 3rd party app to backup properly is a "problem". And finally, not having it in snapshot form with EVERYTHING backed up (not just files, but everything, down to ringtone settings etc) is a "problem".

If it weren't then people wouldn't moan about the iPhone, as it will do anything you want once it's jailbroken.

Several things which are slightly less simple on Android doesn't compare to some of the limitations with iOS.

Saying it has 'polish' doesn't wash, and doesn't make the issues iOS have go away.

Android is a more than capable platform which is ready now.

And I'm telling you, it's not quite ready yet.

I'm not saying its a bad platform by any means, I really like it, and am loving the transition, but there is no denying at all that parts of the apple system are just better, far better. Likewise though, parts of android are far better than the iOS equivalent.

It's fairly obvious the OP just wants another iPhone and is making excuses to justify having one, save your breath folks, at least this way he'll only whinge in the Apple sub-forums.

Not at all, I've already got an iPhone 3G and iPhone 4.

I wanted a change, and I'm merely making observations as to where I'm finding flaws or downsides.

As I just said (although you obviously missed it because you saw the opportunity to be "that" trendy apple hater) I prefer the Android platform in a lot of ways, but I'm not blinkered to any one brand (hence also owning a WinMo and a Blackberry).

You don't need to be trendy to hate Apple, you do need to be a mug to own 3 iPhones though.

I agree with the OP (although I think your observations on Android shouldn't be made on the Nexus, even though it is "pure" Android, the beauty of Android is the open source nature and as a result, stock Android has been improved by the likes of HTC with Sense on the Desire) that Android does lack a polish at the moment.

I love my Desire but I do miss my iPhone in some ways, like the fact I could sync with iTunes and everything was sync'd very quickly and I just knew everything could be returned as is, from iTunes.

I have HTC Sync installed, the new version, for my Desire but it isn't as good as iTunes.

Even Google themselves know that Android is still missing a polish as they're going to be working heavily on the UI in Gingerbread.
