Hi wandering if anyone can help. I've been a bit out of the phone scene for a year or so.

I'm just looking for a bit of advice on choosing a phone.

Basically my 50year old dad is finally looking to upgrade to a smartphone. His eyesight is a bit crap now and he's a farmer so is looking for something at least relatively durable with a decent screen size.

He's never had a smartphone before but gets on quite well with his Android tablet.

He had a quick look in town today and was quite impressed by a quick demo on a Samsung Xcover 2. It seemed ok to me too but I know nothing about the lower to mid range phone.

He will probably buy the handset on its own. Is there anything else around the £200 mark he should be looking at?

Many thanks

Motorola G or N5.

There are also few offers on Lumia 920 - around 170.

I'd probably pick Moto G, because the phone will inevitably get broken or lost with him being a farmer, so 100 won't hurt as much as 200 or 240.

If he's a farmer surely he's going to need a case that's going to offer some pretty good dust/dirt protection, I can only imagine how dirty the pockets must be with all the dirt/dust/metal bits an pieces, worth considering a phone and then finding a really good quality case before committing?

I'm reluctant to take my phone out with me when I'm chainsawing for example, crap gets absolutely everywhere and we all know silica (sand/dirt) will scratch a phone a cropper given a chance ;)

Soundboy - calling him old at 50 .... hope he gives you a good thrashing when you go home :D:D

As has been said the Moto G looks good value for money and though no experience of one am led to believe they are quite good phones. More expensive I'll grant you but recently acquired a Moto X and finding it a cracking phone. For screen size it's very compact and handles very nicely.

I'm a big fan of smart phones and wouldn't go back to the old basic phone. Problem is they're not the best for farmers and other outdoor manual type jobs. Water, dust, grit and crushing in pocket are 4 of many hazards. Some even tell me that arc welding can knac.., I mean break them? Not had any trouble with welder myself though. Glass is glass be it Gorilla or otherwise and is the big weak point when the whole of one side is covered in it. Bigger the phone the more vulnerable it is. I've never had a smart phone last a year I'm ashamed to say though not always down to me ...... HTC???:mad:
Will always have an android smart phone of some sort :)

Which is when you need a phone with you to call for the air ambulance when you saw your leg off

Sorry, bad taste I know.

More seriously what sort of case is recommended? Saw a Proporta 'pouch' on the rainforest site which had an aluminium plate sew in. Looked like it could protect the screen a little but they always look a right faff when you need to use the phone. Personally use a rubber/plastic 'skin' of some description. Nothing too bulky.

The Moto G is water resistant as well which will help.

As is the Moto X though won't survive a prolonged dunking. That said, I dropped into a beck up to my waist and after the initial freezing shock remembered I had my Razr i in trouser pocket. Gave it a shake and dried it on my sleeve and it still works though speaker is a bit on the quite side ever since.
