Orange San Francisco, as it comes out the box ROM.

When editing a text message (or anything for that matter) how do I move the cursor ONE character at time?

On my WinMo phone it had a hardware d-pad.
On my Archois 5IT the Android keyboard has a couple of lewft/right cursor keys.
On my SanFran I stab roughly to the right of where I want to edit, delete a few characters and retype.

this is where htc sense does come in handy.

also smart keyboard pro has an option to enable onscreen cursors.

just tap where you want the cursor to move to.

I don't have fat fingers, but the relative size of my finger and size of text means it's very difficult to place the cursor exactly where I want it.
The capacitive screen doesn't work with a fingernail or other pointy object.

Bummer, good news that 2.3 fixes the problem with vanilla Android then...
All the main OEM custom UIs I've tried are good at selecting text, even motorola  :p

Maybe try smart keyboard pro until someone makes a gingerbread ROM for the SF?

Well I found out from Modaco that the TouchPal keyboard (included with the OSF) can do this.

A long press on the pencil icon brings up a cursor keypad.
