Android widget doesn't stay put!

Ever since upgrading to 4.3, the task widget I used to have using up a whole home screen seemed to disappear from the widget menu. I was a bit annoyed, but then when I found you could do the same with the monthly calendar instead, I wasn't too bothered, and decided to use that instead.

Trouble is, every time I come back to my device a little later, that screen has been cleared (the widget has walked away on it's own!)

Does anyone have and ideas how to keep it on the screen, before I try a backup & full reset?

No, I don't even have an SD card in my phone :/

It's an S3. And no, I haven't tried any alternative launchers, I've never really felt the need to look into them tbh. It's the built in android calendar that has a widget to show the current month on a screen.
