AndroidAP Different Phones Same SSID

As I have no internet ATM, I am tethering from a mobile. As the the data allowance is nearly used I tried to use my wifes phone. Unfortunately when Android AP appears as available it wont accept the password o second phone as though it is expecting to use the SSID of the first phone. Is it not possible for a laptop say to use two tethering devices but with different passwords.

No, if the SSID is the same then the client device expects the password to be the same too.

You're better off changing the SSID on the other phone to something different if you want the password to be different.

Depends on the phone model. For Pixel for example go to Settings -> Network and Internet -> Hotspot and tethering -> Wi-Fi hotspot then tap on "Hotspot name" to change the SSID.
