Wasn't sure where to actually put this post, so apologies if it should be somewhere else.

Anyone here own an Anki overdrive and have some thoughts?

We bought a set yesterday for my son's birthday and gave it a quick test last night.
Not sure whether to keep or return it.

The track system is nicely done, and very easy to put together/pull apart. So thumbs up for that.
Control by a smartphone? So what really. Never saw what was wrong with a traditional type, and if anything, shouldn't the game be cheaper with fewer physical parts? All the same, seems easy enough to control.

The game modes, i.e. allowing upgrades and guns feels a bit naff.
Lastly, and this is the killer point, there appeared to be little actual skill required in driving the cars. I can't remember crashing once, and there appeared to be no need to modulate the throttle to get around a corner. Maybe it's because it was a 10 min test, but can anyone comment on whether the driving gets any better?

We have a micro-scalextrix, which is nuts fast, and that is very much all or nothing, with no ability to hang the back of the car out, as my old 1/32nd scale Polistil set allows.

I can see how this might well appeal to my 8 year old. But right now, I'm feeling rather underwhelmed. Any thoughts or comments?

I haven't tried it yet but personally think it looks great.

The problem with scalextrix is it's too much of a faff, requires quite a bit of skill and ultimately attracts adults more than it does kids. Every time my nephew has played with my scalextrix he's got fed up of putting the car back on the track.

The below video gives some good ideas, and it looks like more fun can be had by introducing ramps/banks which increase the need to control the throttle.

two of my friends have it and bought a lot of extra track so we had a giant track going all around their living room. Really good fun and unlike scalextrix it just builds super easily and the power ups spice things up a bit. We even had a little jump on it.

He prefers it to his scalectrix and this is someone who had a 30m track going around his house.

Do the cars ever get faster/more difficult to drive as the game progresses?

I must admit I didn't like the one I tried.

Seemed a bit gimmicky, myself. The power ups and boosts don't feel natural, given it's not like you can see anything actually happen on the track.
