I’m not looking for medical advice, just peoples experiences of an ankle sprain and how long it took them to get back to some normality/walking.

So I sprained my right ankle 13 days ago. I’ve no idea how I did it, I don’t play sports and didn’t roll it while out walking. Even worse, it’s the medial (inside) of my ankle which I’m led to believe happens far less frequently than doing the outside of your ankle (and the medial ligaments are stronger).

Im still unable to walk on it without crutches and all this lying about is starting to get me down to be honest. It is getting better as until the past 2/3 days, I could only put weight on the ball of my right foot. Now I can place it flat and walk somewhat with crutches. I still get the odd bit of tightness and paid behind the ankle running vertically.

I had it x-rayd at A&E last week and there’s no fracture (although I did discover I had previously fractured it without even knowing, recurring theme here!).

Its going to depend on what tissues you damaged.

Ligament tissue is notoriously slow at healing, muscular much quicker, tendons somewhere in the middle.

What's the follow up after your A&E appointment? Physio? Rehab etc?? Exercises??

Timeframe - could be days/weeks/months depending on the severity of it.

Strongly suggest getting some Physio appointment booked - Ask for local recommendations. Ligaments can take weeks/months to heal depending on what's happened.

I crashed my bike into the tram lines 2 weeks ago and my ankle really started knacking up, think it's turned into tendonitis now like I had on my right foot when I knacked that one up, seems to go after a month. Easier to cycle than walk now, walking is hard.

Normally several weeks, depending on severity.
Used to roll my ankles for years, last time it swelled up like a tennis ball, with a nice black line going up the outside of my leg.

Took me a long time to figure out it was my shoes, I just assumed I was pronating, and though I was such shoes would roll my ankles.
Switched to neutral shoes and never looked back.

I visited my GP with a bunch of issues. On the ankle, he said to get back in touch if it wasn’t better in a week or 2. No follow up for that was mentioned. I was looking into private physio.

Just try not to walk on it and it should heal a lot quicker.
I only had to because of my leg break that needed me to walk on it to heal.
There’s loads of conflicting information online. Some say to try and walk on it to help it heal, others say what you say. And these are medical people!

I would always say gentle use is good, no using it will cause more muscle loss and possible issues with everything tightening up. I damaged my knee and avoided bending it and walking for a few weeks and it took 6 weeks of physio to get it going again!

As for how long it will take to heel who knows could be a couple of weeks could be a couple of months, listen to your body and don’t over do it!

Indeed, Sprains go from Owch to WTF i am about to pass out.....

Listen to your body, Walking a easy 50m to the shop & Back fine, going for a 1km walk with dog NO.

When I sprained mine, the physio suggested it could be around the six-week mark, though I noticed a substantial improvement after about 2 ~ 3 weeks.
