I'm currently doing research (and saving) toward a new gaming rig. I'm still running an ageing AMD 64 3400+ with 2GB of DDR RAM and an AGP (yep, AGP) X1950 Pro 512MB.

I'm leapfrogging, like, 2.5 (?) gens in my planned purchase of an i7 920 rig sporting either a GTX 295 or ATI 5xxx GPU. I'm also purchasing an 1920x1200 24" monitor.

You surely must understand, then, that the first game I load up onto that new PC has to be a looker; has to push the hardware; and, moreover, has to totally blow me away.

Anno 1404 seems to fit the bill: I love city-building games.

Also known as Dawn Of Discovery, this latest Anno title seems to have been critically well recieved, however hasn't seemed to have developed a sizeable fanbase - not that I can see.

How many of you have got/played this title? Is it as pretty as the handful of HD videos on YouTube would have me believe? And, as a game, how does it play?

Regards,
Pete.

Yep, Anno 1404 is certainly an extremely beautiful looking game. And one that is actually well optimised. I can almost get to max settings at 1680x1050 on a spec nearly as good as yours. You should be able to do it at 1900x1200.
Oh, great game as well :)

Anno 1404 should be a good first game!

I too love city building games, and really like the graphics on this game.

I'm running it on full settings @ 1680 x 1050 on a PIIX4 955 and GTX260 so will run very nicely on yours.
