Annoying as hell ATI driver bug (Fixed, BIOS related)

So I got my brand new 4870 XFX xXx edition card today. So I am installing the latest drivers and after a reboot with the new drivers I notice my screen is flickering quite a lot, so I look up on the web and find that this has been a bug that has plagued some users for quite a while. As I have read the basic issues seems to be when the card goes over 900Mhz Memory Clock it can cause the screen to flicker :S, seems mine is doing that, when I turn the clock down to 900Mhz from 950Mhz the bug goes away. I mean, does anyone know a fix for this or am I totally screwed here? Dont wanna send the card back, just wanna play games at the moment :(. Only happens after installing the display driver, never when the card is first installed.

Yeh i agree - a 50Mhz drop is unoticable mate - will be much much safer that way. There is nothing to say that the replacement card wont do the same and you wouldnt receive it for a month anyway - at best.

I think though I don't know for certain but the ATI 48XX series doesn't tend to overclock that well since they are throttled a fair bit anyway at stock hence the heat output. They kick out more heat than their Nvidia contempories which overclock better.

That's an XFX overclocking problem, not an ATI driver bug as you call it; XFX used to have a lot of problems like this with thier NV overclocked cards too; I suspect the testing they do on thier cards is limited to only a few cards per batch, not all of them as it should be.

Damn, gonna have to go through XFX then by the looks of things, I dont mind lowering it to 900 but its just annoying that it doesnt work properly :P, trying to get a bios update for the card now, doesnt seem to be working though.

Agreed - given the small overclock on the XXX edition I suppose they assumed all the cards would be capable of it, and the small number that wouldn't be able to would just get sent back, tested and replaced. Frankly I'd RMA it and emphasise how disappointed you are that your first XFX card you ever bought was broken, and that you are now so disillusioned with their brand, after hearing they were such a trusted brand name and see if you can't squeeze a better card out of them.

It's strange nonsensical driver bugs like these that have always put me off buying ATI cards, even though they release new drivers every month you'll be lucky to get this fixed within 6mths... infact by the look of it it's been present 4mths already.

The fix is to not overclock your memory? sorry but that's a workaround.

This ISN'T a driver bug  this is a card fault with an XFX overclocked card.

Why do people assume every fault is driver caused? Poorly tested overclocked cards, general faults, and even system conflicts all seem to get pointed at the drivers, when I really don't think it is always the case!

The fact the card is stable when put down to standard clocks says the problem is with the card, not with the drivers. ATI drivers in general are fine.

Well the flickering only happens when you install the Catalyst Drivers so I mean, guess it was just a simple mistake, but a frustrating one for an XFX and ATI fan considering the trouble I have went through to get this card.

You should learn to understand the difference from an over clocked card from a standard one, then you will see that its not a driver bug but a over clock problem.

If someone overclocks the CPU & notepad works fine but prime95 fails then its a bug in Prime95 from your stance.

Its not the first time that i have seen pre overclocked cards fail, but are ok at the common clocks.

I had a HIS 3870 850Mhz card that would kill the driver until i under clocked it to 800Mhz.
That would mean a hardware problem not a driver bug.

So it is very likely that it is the OC that the card can not cope with, then how the hell do you expect ATI to fix it as its not their problem.

It was a bios with the card that I have now flashed on my mums computer and is running perfect at the OC timings, read the artical that I posted, it wasnt just the XFX cards, other brands were mentioned there to.

The point was that its a problem with the card & not the drivers that i was making with people here continually pointing the finger at the driver because its the easiest thing to-do .

Problems with 4xxx Bioses are well known & is still not down to the drivers.

You had not until just now, mentioned that you had fixed the issue with your card through the BIOS which would have stopped the driver fault comments in there tracks.

Yeah because I just found that solution, before that the only thing that would work was either lowering the clock via CCC or disabling the CCC itself thats why I pointed at the driver :P, least I know now it was a BIOS problem.

My comment where not pointed at you because you were open to other possibilities for the cause of the problem besides the obvious which is always a good frame of mind to be in as that has allowed you to put the problems right more or less by your self as shown here. :)

Others here had given up at the first chance & solely blamed the drivers.
