Hi all

Still solidering on with my Motorola Milestone. Recently upgraded to the official 2.2 firmware, and have found a highly annoying "feature"

On the original 2.1 software when you adjusted the volume there was a vibrate mode, and then a total silent, everything off mode. On 2.2 there is only a vibrate mode, so for example, when I am in bed I cannot have the phone on totally silent, it'll still vibrate and as a light sleeper if I leave it on my bed it'll wake me. (I have my vibrate setting as 2sec constant vibrate rather than pulses!)

Is this exclusive to motorolas firmware and if I swapped to a custom rom I would get the old one back... or is this just how it is now? :(

Press the volume up one notch from vibrate.

One notch up will still have vibrate on and a very quiet sound... that's no good!

On 2.1 it went
Volume High
Volume Lower
etc
Volume Lowest
Silent but still Vibrate
Silent and no vibrate.

Hmmm, on my 2.2 it goes

Minimum = vibrate
One up from vibrate = silent

Maybe I changed a setting somewhere.

Settings > sound > vibrate options > only when not in silence mode?

Motoblur has that on 2.3.3 (can't remember 2.2)

This is closer but it still lacks the "vibrate only" function that was above completely silent on 2.1. Which is no good as I like to have my phone on vibrate when at work.
I know I am hilariously awkward but the 2.1 behavior suited me so well!

And drat, seems like it's moto's update. Gives me more reason to install one of the 2.3 based roms I suppose... see if it's any better :p

I've noticed that different Desire ROMs behave differently like this. Personally I just use an app called Ring Scheduler, I put my phone to vibrate only overnight and then loud again at 8am. I think you can schedule meetings with it so maybe take a look on the market.

if you are going to install a custom rom to sort this out, look for one with 'quiet hours' built in (CyanogenMod etc..).

you basically set the times your phone makes no noise.

between 10pm & 5:50am my phone is completely silent (alarm goes off at 5:55), the rest of the time it works as normal. no settings to remember to change each night.

I just turn mine on to Plane mode at bedtime, no texts or ringing and the alarm still works in the morning

Just use a widget on the home screen for easy access :)
