I Get 'Auto-disconnect in ...seconds' in the top right of the screen when joining games.

Usually happends when joining the first one or two games, but can happen randomly. It is very annoying  After that it plays absolutely fine.

I have windows firewall and steam is allowed on there. I have also opened up more ports on router, but it still doesn't do anything. I have always had this problem. Firstly at my student house with O2. Now at my home with BT. I have also formatted several times since then.

Anyone have any ideas?

And yes I've tried the steam forums many times... but no luck yet.

wired or wireless network? valve games try and keep you in game when you drop connection and will retry for 25 seconds or whatever it is, if your networking is flaky dropped packets can cause this

It's wired and I don't have packet loss problems in other games.

I have the same issue and i am also on BT....althoguh this issue only started a few weeks ago on L4D2 Mine is slightly worse too. I get disconnected and it also ends up rebooting my router.

If i try a few times it will eventually work though.

My mate had this very issue with the first L4D too. I think its something to do with the homehub.

I am also wired and have a very stable connection.

Is the BT homehub a repackaged Thompson 780 or something? Maybe this is why I have the same problem as I did when I was on O2? That was a Thompson 780 thingy

i have the same problem , but everytime i join a game i get kicked first time then i can normally join fine after that, also on bt with home hub 2

SAME

Thanks everyone for responses. I may buy a new reuter tonight and see if that cures it. Will reply with results at another date.

It's 99% likely it's down to the BT home hubs being rebadged Speedtouch/Thompson devices. Check the fix in case below as my Bebox built off the same hardware:

You'll need to connect to your router by telnet. Click on "Start", then select "Run", type "cmd" and press Enter or click "Ok". This will bring up a command prompt.
Type "telnet speedtouch", or if that doesn't work then type "telnet 192.168.1.254".
You will be prompted to login to the modem with a username/password. The default is one of the following:

Username: Administrator [edit: this is the default for BeBox]
Password: None (or try the Serial number on the bottom of your BeBox).

Username: admin [edit: this is the default for HomeHub]
Password: admin

Username: SuperUser [edit: this is the default for the O2WirelessBox]
Password: O2Br0ad64nd

If neither of those combinations work, please contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance

Once you have logged in, you will be presented with the command line of your modem. This is where you must enter the following commands:
Type "connection bindlist" and press enter. This will list connection bindings.
Look for a line that contains "GAME" and some port numbers. For example: GAME(UDP) udp 27010-27011
Enter the command: "connection unbind application=GAME(UDP) port=27***-27***" and press enter. The port numbers in this command must match the numbers that are listed in your GAME port listing, similar to the example above.
When finished, close the command line and launch Steam. Try joining the game server and see if it works correctly. If it does not, please contact your router manufacturer or Internet.

I couldn't connect to telnet, but I did make sure Steam games were added in the application list thingy.
