Hey guys, I was hoping I can get some insight to a recent recurring problem with my mid-2010 MBP 13".

Recently, I've been having an issue where the laptop suddenly turns itself off completely, even if the magsafe is connected. On restart, the fan is running at full speed, the date is reset back to 2000, and there is a big X through the battery icon in the menu bar stating there are no batteries available. It also forgets all my wifi passwords too. The backlight also doesn't work until I fix it.

I managed to fix the latest occurrence by manually resetting the SMC by holding down shift+ctrl+option whilst pressing the power button. Now it's back to normal again, but the question is for how long, as this is the 3rd/4th time in total it's happened now. Although this morning the light on the charger isn't lit at all, and yet again it's refusing to charge.

Basically, I've been experiencing all the symptoms on this page:

The thing is, I've already had it back from repair from a premium reseller who had replaced the logic board after the exact same problem developed before; and I had the magsafe power adapter also sent off together with it but that checked out fine.

I'll probably take it in again, though I'm tempted to book an appointment to the nearest official Apple store up in Exeter instead. I'm just curious as to what the problem might be, as it clearly wasn't the logic board after all. According to coconutBattery, it's still using the original battery so that may be the culprit, but I honestly don't know.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Cheers.

Just an update on this.

Went off to Exeter today and booked a Genius Bar appointment and agreed that the new logic board should have fixed it, but some other component is possibly shorting out the SMC chip - hence the problems.

They've agreed to give me a brand new replacement, and as the C2D model I have is discontinued that means I get a Core i5 SB instead! Result.

Really impressed with the customer service, kudos to Nick at Apple Exeter as well.

Getting a SB MBP out of them is pretty sweet - good for you. Your original MacBook was clearly faulty and so they should replace it.

 YOU GET SB!!!! Iv had 2 logic board replacements on my 09 mbp (one was my own fault and im very lucky to have had it done for free) but boy im jealous!

Nice one there
