So for a long time I have used a microsoft optical usb/ps2 mouse
one of these bad boys, I'm sure we all know them well:

My parents also had one the same except a different colour. They have been faithful servants for years. A few months ago my parents reported that theirs had stopped working, every so often it would be non-responsive so I agreed to buy myself a new mouse and give them my working (as far as I knew) one. I try my mouse in their PC (XP btw) and sure enough it has the same problem as the one they threw out.

So they get the new mouse and I keep the old MS one. I try the MS mouse with my computer (vista) and it now seems to have the same problem (I hadn't used it in a while so don't know when it started.

The symptoms are that every so-often (once a minute) the mouse stops working and the optical light goes off for a few seconds.

I have tried to update the driver but it says that it has the most up-to-date version. There is no option to roll-back the driver, and windows reports it as working correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what has caused these trusty mice to suddenly stop working on both vista and XP?

Is it connected with USB or PS/2?

Whichever it is I suggest you try the other one.

If you still have the same issues it's probaly a hardware fault with the mouse.

Might have been a dodgy USB port? Would have thought that would have stopped the mouse completely rather than an intermittent fault though..

The reason that I don't think that it is a problem with the mouse is that it has happened to two mice of the same model at the same time.

I'm using USB at the moment, time to dig out an adaptor from the attic I guess!

I have tried every port :(
