I have a problem that continues to increase with its persistence. It first happened few years ago but in recent weeks and months it became really annoying. Because I don’t know what it is, I am going to describe it here.
First time, few years ago I get a crash and the OS doesn’t want to boot, I get a message, “Reboot and select proper boot device”.
As always, I was reading forums etc, but I found a solution on my own by accident. I discovered that if I switch off the power of my power supply and on after about 30 seconds, the OS will load, and problem of crashes disappears for some time. I don’t know why my SSD decides to play dead but when I get this, “Reboot and select proper boot device”, the SSD isn’t listed in my BIOS at all. The trick with turning the power off/on usually works though.
Very recently that trick didn’t want to work, I thought that it may be actually dead but when I inserted pen drive with installation of Windows 10, it immediately appeared on the list in command prompt box.
The problem reappeared few times in recent few years but never was too consistent. I suspect that perhaps Windows 10 updates has something to do with those crashes at least partially. However, I can’t confirm that, I could be totally wrong.
In past years it was very seldom that the OS crashed but in recent weeks and months, I can get the crashes very often but there is a catch. For some reason the crashes happen in the first hour or two after the computer was turned on. The reason I was hesitant to commit into fixing this issue for so long is that if I don’t turn off the PC overnight, I won’t get any crashes. That is why I think that some services that run-in background could have something to do with it. Afterall in the Task Manager processes tab there often is the Service Host that uses often over 30% of CPU.
Also, there is much bigger chance of a crash if I run a video game within those two hours, but I had crashes with nothing but Edge browser open.
Sometimes when it crashes everything freezes, sometimes I get a black screen, sometimes just resets but sometimes I get a blue screen with a report and below are stop codes from few I got and took a picture.
25/05/2019 - Stop code: KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
09/05/2019 - Stop code: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL
What failed: nvlddmkm.sys
04/04/2019 – Stop code: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
What failed: win32kfull.sys
I tried to use CCleaner to fix my PC problems and clean registry. It didn’t help.
My solution now is to format my primary SSD drive and reinstall the OS, but I am posting this because if someone could help me to find what the real problem is and how to fix it, it would be far better.
My PC:
Motherboard is Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H
Graphic card: GTX970
3 x SSD,
Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
