Hi all,

Right got this weird thing happening with my sky digital box, since about half past 1 this morning the little green telephone light on the front of it has been coming on, then about 20 secs later the phone rings once then stops, anyone any clue what the **** is going on as its driving me potty, its been doing it every 10 minutes since then!!!.

Ive looked in the manual for it and theres bugger all about it, its the Amstrad one btw.

Thanks. :)

Unplug it from the phone line, I don't think it needs to be connected to work. If it does need it, wire a 9v battery to the phone cable and that should fool it into thinking it is connected.

As far as I'm aware you don't need the phone line connected for the updates. Only if you have multiroom.

Yeah we got the multiroom, sorry should have mentioned that. :)

Very odd its finally stopped, well it aint done it for about 20 minutes.

also its in your T&C that you have it connected at all times
they get it to send info back to then once in a while, if it doesn't do it for over x number of months they start posting letters to you,

I think I'm right in saying that's only for the first 12 months of the contract, though.

When we had our box installed, our phone line wouldn't work. The installer (independent) thought it was our phone system (you dial 9 for an outside line, but you didn't get a dialtone after that). So, as a result, we didn't have ours plugged in for about 2 years. No letters arrived.

When we got Sky+ and multiroom, it turned out that the problem wasn't our phone system - the cable the installer had knocked together didn't actually work!

Yeah we've only had the multiroom for about 4 months if that i think, well it aint done it anymore since it stopped just after 1, but it was doing it for about 12 hrs!!, was annoying as hell as the first time it went i jumped out of bed to go answer it, but then it stopped after the 1 ring, so i was just getting back into bed when it went again, so i was gona go down do the old 1471 to see who it was, but then i noticed the green light coming on on the box, so i said **** it, and tried to get to sleep, which was damn near impossible as the **** kept ringing once every 10 minutes. :(

Sorry i posted in the wrong section. :D

No it doesn't need to be connected. Only need it if you're going to pay for stuff on Sky.

er... we don't have multiroom and sky started sending me snotty letters last year telling me that the box wasn't connected to the phone line. Even after an engineer had come out, replaced the box (they said it wasn't responding to callbacks) and CONFIRMED the line was working, they continued to send me letters and eventually told me that they would be charging me the full installation fee as it is in the T&C that you are connected to a phone line at all times....and we've had the system for over 4 years and sky+ for 2. After spending over an hour trying to get through to them, they confirmed they WERE getting callbacks from my machine. They then charged me over £100 for my monthly payment as I had 'broken' the T&Cs. After much hassle I finally managed to get hold of someone to deal with the problem and she rang us every single night for a month to tell us that the phone line was showing as disconnected again and although it was clearly their problem there was nothing she could do to stop the charges. In the end I threatened to cancel the lot and take them to court for harrassment and neglect of duty and they finally decided that they'd had successful callbacks from our machine - this is after charging me £100 and then 'forgetting' to refund it. They then gave me two months for free, but i'm getting annoyed reading these and finding out that half of you aren't even connected to the ruddy phonelines anyway. They are FOOLS i tells ya, FOOLS!
