Annoying windows sizing problem

Each time for some reason when I open a new window it laid out like this, the space for the main screen made into a tight column, obviously I dont want it that way, how do i get it to "fix" into the proportions I want them in!

Try this:

Set the folder how you want it to appear
Press alt to bring up the menu
Go to tools > folder options
Go to the View tab
Click apply to folders
Click yes
Click OK
?????

One of my biggest pet peeves about windows is the way it seems to arbitrarily decide which folder view it gives you sometimes.

That reminds me, I really should figure out how the whole Microsoft account thing works - if you convert a domain account to a Microsoft account (does it even let you?) does that account then have some weird dual personality when it comes to credentials?
