Hi Guys,

Firstly i've done a little bit of research and have come to the conclusion that for around the 200 mark, these are my options:

Dell Ultrasharp 2208WFP 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Midnight Grey
£190

Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor
£196

Dell SP2208WFP 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor with Webcam - Arctic Silver
£211

Samsung SM-2232BW Pebble 22"
£223

LG L227WT 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black
£211

-----------

Now, i have an LG19 at the moment and i love it so i'm tempted to go with the last option. When i searched the forums i couldn't find that much in the way of threads about this monitor, but wow, 10,000:1!

Anyways, i know the Samsungs are good but according to other similar threads, your not always guaranteed to get the decent Samsung panels?

Please help.

The panel lottery in the past with the 226BW is something that I believe I'm right in saying is long since over. I've got a 226BW, and absolutely love it. To clarify, the other panels weren't worse than the Samsung panel once calibrated (infact, the A-Panel was actually superior to the Samsung once you'd fully calibrated the monitor), but the S-Panel had the best "out of box" experience.

I'd recommend the Samsung without any reservation, especially at that price.

I wouldnt put too much faith in the 10,000:1 contrast ratio as that is dynamic not static contrast which IMO & many others as well is not as good by far and its annoying!

Based on what I have read and heard the Samungs are quite good screens, and even though you might not get a Samsung panel after a bit of tweaking they produce virtually the same picture quality, however if you want a Samsung panel and can stretch the budget a little then the 226CW is the one you want :)

The Dell Ultrasharp 2208WFP was tempting me as I had the 17" square version for a few years and it was a great monitor but I have seen a lot of people moaning about the IQ is not very good at all which is a real shame, as the physical aspects of it are really good.

I wouldnt touch the other Dell, also based on reading peoples feedback, it isnt that good a monitor apparantly?

Dont get me started on the 'Pebbles'! Seeing them in the flesh, they are really plasticy and tacky looking, the stand wobbles etc etc... Just my opinion as I am sure some may disagree with me but I feel its just trying too hard to look nice but not trying enough to be a good monitor.

As for the LG, well I dont have anything to say on that one, I am considering it for myself but havent really seen anyones feedback on it yet to make an informed decision.

Hope some of this helps? :D

Cheers D.M looks like i'll go the Samsung at that price. Unless anyone can convince me otherwise. Why is the 226CW so much better>?

The CW is the BW, but with a guaranteed Samsung panel. I don't think there were actually any other alterations to it, but I stand ready to be corrected...

Makhaira said it all really about the different panels, not that any are really better but more a case of the Samsung panel is better out of the box, so the 226CW has the Samsung panel I believe (less faffing around) :)

now where did i read that the cw wasnt as good as the bw?

cant remember so never mind i guess

I thought all this panel crap was over and done with?

Not meaning to sound funny but I think you're missing the point of whats been said, the CW is the Samsung Panel, and the BW may still have multiple panels but they can all be corrected to a very similar IQ, now whether you go for a hardware/software calibration or just simply use ths OSD and your GFX drivers is upto you but personally at this end of the market i'd just buy the one you can happily afford and enjoy it :D

Dont worry about the different panels, they should all be designed to meet a specific spec, just needs tweaking. I have heard a lot of 226BW owners say that they love their monitor, so I guess that says it all really :)

Yep will do. Purchased from OCUK a few minutes ago :D Now, what to do with my old LG 19. It's only 6 months months old.
