Well my 3 year old XFX 8800GTS XXX Edition 320mb card has died... well, it's got vram issues and will only run with the vista drivers, nvidia ones give me a BSOD....

So, I need a new card for my aging machine! Here are the specs:

Corsair Modular 520W PSU
500GB WD Sata2
Intel core duo E6600 @ 2.4Ghz
Corsair DHX twin2X RAM @ 2GB
Asus P5k Moboard
OS is Vista 64

Along with a new GPU, I want to upgrade the RAM and fiddle with my cpu speed, so that needs to be taken into consideration regards the new GPU.

I'm not too sure if I want Nvidia again, they seem mightily priced compared to their ATI counterparts! Cards I have been looking at include:

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5830 1024MB

I can't see where the £10 difference comes in on these cards!!

As you can see, the budget is around the £100 mark. I'm still a bit ****ed off that my 8800gts cost me £200 and only lasted 3 years so I am reluctant to spend any more cash.

So what's the general opinion??

I was going to jump in with "GTX460 1GB". However these seem to have disappeared off into the realms of stupid in terms of price so i'd agree with the HD5830.

The only other option really is to go second hand. You might be able to get an HD5850 that way.

I was looking at a gtx460 to start with but the price put me off a bit too. Also, I don't know if my cpu would be too slow to get the most out of that card!
The games I mostly play are TF2, BFBC2 and Assassins Creed 2. DX11 would be nice but I don't think necessary for these games.

The HD6850 1GB is around £140 and is slightly faster than a GTX460 1GB:

It also only requires a single PCI-power connector meaning it also consumes less power too.

An HD6850 1GB overclocked by 165MHZ to 175MHZ for the GPU consumes less power than a GTX460 1GB at stock clockspeeds when under load:

I see you point with power consumption and speed, but the HD6850 is £50 out of my price range at the moment. I still need to buy RAM and I'm not too confident with GPU overclocking.
If I was building a whole new rig, I would definitely take the HD6850 into consideration! But since this is a bit by bit upgrade and I really need a graphics card due to my current situation, I really have to stick to my budget. Saying that though, I don't want to buy something that will be obsolete in a year or so...

what resolution do you game at? If its above 1680*1050 you may benefit more from a 1gb or higher card. The 5770 at around £100 would seem good for your budget as you dont seem keen to oc?

1280x1024 is the max my screen can do, so till I can afford a new screen that doesn't factor much.
I've gone ahead and bought the GTX460 OC 768MB, I think that should cover my needs for now and future ones too! :)
