Another, another 40D is here thread.. Does the congo'bongo? Now FEAT ISO samples

Okay so I never post a thread regarding buying new equipment because I normally don't see the point however, given the apparent fetish for buying these this week I thought I would do a thread myself given that this cam isn't even a day old yet.

I don't need to buy any camera to get an idea what its like because I research them in so much depth and have handled most on the market anyway but I really do love this camera. Its a new camera excitement I am getting which was missing when I upgraded the 20D to a 30D. This now feels like a dynamite upgrade.

What I love:
Magnified viewfinder (a much needed feature)
Buttons aligned at the bottom of the LCD (helps with viewing the screen with minimal distractions)
AF On (custom set this on AEL on previous models so I am happy its got its own button)
Solid flash hot shoe.
Body refinements are perfect. Feels like a proper piece of kit now.
Battery door is sealed and feels more solid with a cool eject feature.
CF Door more solid.
Body raised so is more comfortable and balanced to hold without a grip.
Canon logo looks nice and not like a massive white underline saying "pop up flash here!"
AF performance is excellent for this series of camera.
ISO viewfinder (at last)
Live view. Really good I find. Will use it when doing product shots and macro (hell of a drain on the battery however)
6.5 FPS (more n more like the Mark II every day. Very quick.
Shutter sound. No more crap slappy slappy that drove me bonkers. I preferred the sound on the 350D over the 20, 30D sound! Drove me bonkers!

What I don't like:
Print Button (Canon remove it or make a custom function so I can make it blink like a crazy disco!)

All images about were taken by its retarded brother... Rest in peace.

If I had money, no doubt I would have purchased the 40D due to the recent threads. Having no money is actually really good :D

Dammit. :(

That's 5 I now know have got theirs this week

By the time I get mine they will be more common than a Ford Fiesta!

Congrats dude :)

But the thing about a Ford Fiesta is it's cheap but terrible, at the mo the 40D is cheap but amazing!

Is that the 24-70 L Jon on the last pic? looks nicely balanced (visually) on the body, I think my 17-55 now looks small on the 40D whereas on the 350D it dominated the body so looked quite meaty - not so much now hehe but a hood attached to it will soon change that!

Glad you like your 40D Johnny :) It looks a cracking piece of kit. The 24-70/2.8 is also a dream to behold, if you get a sharp copy.

tbh the 40D is a crap camera, why bother when the 400D is 10mp too and half the price?

I have the 24-105 F4L is mounted to the front of my 40D most of the time, and the balance is sublime...i'm considering swapping it for a 24-70 but the fact that the 105 is sharper and also better with static objects (due to is) makes me think i should keep it....and then ill do something where someone is moving and wish I had 2.8..........round in circles eh! high iso of the 40D helps take the edge off of it though.

24 - 70 is also on my to buy list.

Also on mine. Love my Sigma 17-70 to bits but i just want more clarity now.

It's either the Canon 24-70 or a 40D....What would be my best bet?

Sell my 30D, get a 40D and 24-70mm. That may be plausible. But i really want 2 camera's, always situations arise where i need my 70-200 and then my 17-70 which makes me lose great shots while i am faffing about changing lenses.

Here is a quick test to show ISO performance on the Canon EOS 40D
Tests were performed on the 40D locked to a tripod and controled via live view mode USB'd to the computer. All settings were adjusted remotely to ensure the highest quality obtainable under natural light flowing through a half closed blind.

The last 3 images are performed at 800, 1600, 3200 with bounced flash shot at 1/60th.

Please enjoy. Each sample is accompaned by its full res jpeg and non of the images are processed at all. These photos are RAW images exported to jpeg.

The images are yours free to use however you fancy.

I also own a 17-70mm Sigma, it is a very clear crisp lens. Though what about the Canon 18-80 USM IS ! ?
That is just under £300 at the Mo !

love the noise control on the 40D even at 3200 its perfectly acceptable! a lot better than the 400D @ 1600
