Hi all

So, not built a new system for a few years and just getting to grips with new standards and such ... I see the Asus rog B650E-F board has pcie5 on gfx and 1 M.2, which is fine for me, but is there such thing as Pcie5 for the cpu as well??

Do i need to go to X670 for that? Would that be considered Full pcie5 ???

I got the 7800x3d (which supports pcie5??) so just need to get the correct board.

Tia

Ouch! Hurts my old eyes that :D I will get on my desktop soon to have a proper look, thanks pal.

Just noticed on the box of the MSI X670E carbon it still says Pcie5 ready (Gfx and Nvme ONLY) ?? And that is 670e, so what chipset supports pcie5 on the cpu as well? if any??

Idd, but my question is, is there a mobo/chipset that has cpu support at pcie5? It's the 'ONLY' on the boxes that makes me wonder if there is such a thing?

The PCIe lanes start at the CPU, the motherboard decides how they are connected. I have a B650e-e and 4 gen 5 lanes are connected to the chipset and the rest to the GPU and M.2’s. Two M.2s are gen 5 (one shares lanes with the GPU) and the other two are gen 4, one of the gen 4 M.2’s is connected to the chipset and the other to the CPU. I would suggest getting the B650E-E over the B650E-F. Also, the Intel NIC’s are unreliable so would suggest a USB NIC just in case it has problems, mine worked for ~4 months and then started having issues.

x670 normal and E versions should all support pcie5 via nvme, its only the E versions that support pcie5 on GFX, if your asking whether there is a Mb that only supports pcie5 for the gfx and not nvme then i dont think they exists

Ok, but no, i was asking if there is such thing as Pcie5 on the CPU? It's probably just me confusing myself and others :/

Thanks, For the replies and attempting to make me understand this more ;)

The CPU provides the PCI-Express lanes that the graphics card and 1 or 2 M.2 slots are connected to, so the Ryzen 7000 CPU IS PCI-E 5.0.

If you buy a B650 motherboard with no PCI-Express 5.0 whatsoever, then the CPU is still PCI-E 5.0 enabled, you just can't use those lanes with any devices.

It is easier to understand on Intel systems because you can get block diagrams, there's one on this page (it is under the table, scroll down a bit):

If you download the manual for B650E Aorus Master, here, then there's a block diagram (page 5) provided by Gigabyte for how they wired everything up.

PCIe is just the protocol used to send/receive data in/out of the CPU to/from external devices. It’s also backwards compatible with older version, gen 1, gen 2, gen 3, gen 4.

Ok, thanks guys.
So ... next question, i have Vengeance ram, 2x16 6400, but its xmp version and not expo, is this still going to be ok?
