Hi Guys,

This is my first post here so Hello to you all :D

I have a PSU question so here goes:

I have just recently built myself a monster Gaming PC a couple of weeks ago with the follow specs:

The Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3
Intel i7 2700K 3.50Ghz @ 4.6 Ghz
8GB Kingston HyperX 1600mhz RAM
Corsair A50 CPU Cooler
(above from overclockerUK)
Seagate 500GB SATAIII
Gainward Geforce GTX580 1.5GB Phantom
Coolermaster HAF X case

Now I went for the Corsair TX850 PSU which is working perfectly fine, but I have now purchased a second GTX580 (exactly the same make model as above) for my SLI and now im wondering if it will enough power for it all. . . anyway I was gonna post this before making my next move but there was a deal going on for the corsair AX1200 PSU so ive bought that now (replacing a 2 week old PSU, i must be mad).

My question is, should I stick with the order and sell the TX850, or will the TX850 be enough and cancel the AX1200?

Cheers guys

The 850w will be plenty, I run 2 on a 750w PSU without issue.
And running the 2700K does not use that much power :)

Nice rig buddy! Like stulid said you have enough juice in the 850W for SLI. Have you considered a SSD instead?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2) £139.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM (ST2000DL003) £99.95
Total : £249.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The SSD will greatly improve the OS load times and any games installed will load faster too. I threw in a 2TB storage drive as well as 500GB doesn't go far these days. Just a thought :)

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your comments and advice, the new AX1200 PSU has been shipped now so I missed the cancel deadline :)
Therefore I have decided to keep the 1200 which should see me through for any future overclocking, upgrades and new parts for a while and ill sell me TX850 PSU removed

As for the hard drive, I find if I get large drives I will just fill it up with crap so I get someones to prevent this. . . 500gb is big enough to install a number of gmaes on at a time, and ill wait a bit longer for SSDs, i just don't think their worth the money at the moment.

Cheers again guys, very helpful :D

Having seen what you've spent on an i7 2700K over an i5 2500K in a gaming machine, I'd have said that an SSD would be an exponentially better way to increase your money's worth.

I'm not criticising your purchase but just the logic of not buying an SSD when you've bumped up that much cash already.

Hmmm really? I just don't see the point in them to be honest, not at this moment anyway while they are so small yet so expensive. As far as I can see, at this moment in time they are only good enough to hold the OS so that it loads up faster and maybe a couple of your fav programs?? while for the same money I can buy a much LARGER drive but I have to wait a number of seconds longer for things to load???

If I have got it wrong then let me know and maybe ill find a reason to buy one but right now I just dont see the advantages at those prices, it not that i cant afford one, it's about forking out money for somethign I dont need

A lot of people say that an SSD was their best upgrade. The responsiveness and loading times of applications is incredible and I speak from first hand experience. The boot/shut down time of your machine will decrease a huge amount too.

I have an 128GB SSD with BF3 and SWTOR on it and I don't know whether it's just my perception but everything just seems smoother. I don't mean frames - just smoother in general with the loading of textures etc.

And I have 65GB spare so there's plenty of room to have other stuff installed. I'm sure some of the other guys here can give you technical reasons why an SSD is a good £ per performance upgrade but just from a general 'look and feel' perspective it was hugely noticable.

edit: Read my original post and it seemed like I was having a go - I wasn't - sorry if it came across that way.

Hey Rusty,

I didn't think you were having a go. . . writing to someone rather speaking is always harder to get accross the way your speaking to someone so I read every post with an open mind :)

OK, well you have also made a fair argument, Ill look into them next month (ive spent enough already  ) see whats avaialble and how much and decide then. Im a BIG battlefiled 3 fan / player so if your saying it will increase my Battlefield 3 gaming even more then i will be interested. If I were to get one id get a 128gb minimum and still keep the 500gb i think.

hey KD, As for the PSU, ill still keep the AX1200 and sell the other cos as you said, if im going to spend money on this thing then I might as well not skimp on the PSU either :)

Hey Rusty and guys,

Well, I took your advice and have just purchased an SSD drive to complete my system, I went for the 256GB Crucial M4 which I hear is one of the better drives. And the AX1200 PSU is GREAT piece of kit adn highly recommend it, so the TX850 will be going up on ebay!!

Cheers for all your help guys :)
